Im not sure what everyone else has been seeing but all I could see on the roof of the tower was a lightning conductor.

no flagstaff present today, a small aerial visible. some great restored fire engines in garage bay of Lothian and Borders fire and rescue hq.

If you look from the castle esplanade there is this enormous flag pole. Unfortunately I'm pretty sure its on the adjacent Art College. Makes you wonder though...
