These buildings have always fascinated me, and having worked in several of them, I have first-hand knowledge of the good and bad aspects of life within. However, with their permanent closure, it is no surprise to me that the high numbers of homeless people with mental health problems has increased drastically over the years. There is precious little 'asylum' for many today. Asylum simply being ' a place of refuge or protection'. Opened in 1870 as the Berkshire County Lunatic Asylum, it eventually became Fair Mile Hospital in 1948 until its closure in 2003. Today I viewed it from the Thames Path, but have visited it several times during my professional career.

Assuming that the chimney itself is what we are looking for here then it remains in good condition. Was looking for a crows foot marking on it of which there is none.

Hospital currently undergoing conversion by Thomas Homes to a mix of private and social housing, with new units also being constructed on site, some of which have been completed and are occupied. Chimney is swathed in scaffolding at present, spoke with site manager to ask its fate - it's being restored/repaired and is being allowed to remain! Whole project should be completed sometime 2014.

Intersected station SU59/INT017. Formerly Fair Mile Hospital. Closed 2003. Now being converted into flats. The chimney seems to be surviving the conversion. The adjacent water tower has been removed.
