Difficult to spot as it was covered in moss, but only roughly a metre away from the path so easy to access if you don't mind stomping on some brambles.

I was wearing shorts and hadn't got bramble bashers with me. All pretty overgrown. Nice day walking The Itchen Navigation from Southampton to Winchester.

GPS got my into the vicinity but lots of undergrowth on the ground. Literally found the block when I kicked it! Block in good condition with a very small rivet in the middle. Despite poor weather an interesting location with great views.

Diversion from a walk along the Itchen Navigation. No GPS with me, so using the iPhone. Spent half an hour in wet vegetation without any luck. Probably much easier in winter

Walked up from St Cross along Five Bridges Road and up onto the old railway line (couldn't resist yet another visit to the Hockley Viaduct) then across the cowslip covered plague pits, straight up St Catherine's Hill to find my first surface block. Slight damage to the top of the block where the concrete cover is crumbling away. Fine views over Winchester & the Itchen on this bright, warm spring day.

Surface block located approx 80m SW from hill top, nothing to reference it to other than some scrubby trees. Chanced upon it quite quickly, although more by luck than judgement as it was covered with moss so despite sitting proud of the ground by approx 15-20cm it was well camouflaged. Concrete is deteriorating; may not be many years before top surface has eroded and rivet is lost.

Station SU31/T308. Block. Having proddded for a little while in some low trees away from the main top, I noticed a block proud of the surface on the top edge. I found it had a small rivet at the centre. I assume this is the block? Last visited by OS 1977. Lovely spot, great views.
