Didn't realise this was a trig point at the time of our visit or I would have taken a closer look. Starting with two shorter hikes, Chatsworth was our third and final hike of the day. Taking advantage of the winter free parking, we set off from beside the house on a 6.5 mile hike. The lodge is in the woods overlooking the house with views across Chatsworth Park.

The Hunting Tower is on the Chatsworth House Estate. The seat of the Duke of Devonshire, Chatsworth House has belonged to the Cavendish family since 1549. After visiting Chatsworth House and buying a pocket watch at one of the stalls, I made my way up through Stand Wood up to the Hunting Tower. All good with the flagstaff. There is also a cut benchmark on the south face of the tower, as well as a flush bracket on a wall on the western side of Chatsworth House. Moreover, there is a rivet benchmark on the left hand side of an archway on the north face of a building to the rear of Chatsworth House. Within the grounds of the Chatsworth House Estate, is St Peter's Church, Edensor. Kathleen Kennedy, the sister of President John F Kennedy, is buried in the Cavendish plot at the top of the graveyard. She was married to William Cavendish, the Marquis of Hartington and heir to the Duke of Devonshire title. He was killed by a German sniper during World War 2 near Heppen, Belgium on September 10, 1944, just 4 months after the marriage. Kathleen Kennedy was killed 4 years later in France in a plane crash on the 13th May 1948. President Kennedy visited her grave on the 29th June 1963, a few months before his assassination. There is a memorial stone dedicated to him next to Kathleen Kennedy's grave, which was placed there after his assassination.

Located in Stand Wood overlooking the magnificent Chatsworth House and Park, which are owned by the Devonshires. Chatsworth is my favourite stately home in England. 1/2 visited today and both are for MR who turns 18 this weekend.

Wandered across the park then a short but steep scramble up through the woodland. Impressive tower. Back down past the artificial waterfalls. Chatsworth busy with visitors.

Took the opportunity to climb up here while on a visit to the big house. A gate on the right of the approach to the farm gets you on the road to the tower. The road may be followed round or there is a short (but steep), direct footpath up through the woods. We had a long chat with the residents, a very friendly couple from Norfolk who had rented the Tower for the weekend.

Stiff climb up from the big House. The high and mighty would sit up in the tower, stirrup cup in hand, watching the hunt below, hooting with derision when a social rival took a tumble.
