Like others, I had to make do with parking on the grass. Pillar in good overall condition - all its metalwork intact. It also now sports a 'fire assembly point' sign. Not sure about the aesthetics of that, but hey... Pillar history: Built date (presumably late 1930s going by computing date) and cost unfortunately not present in the archive . Last maintained by the OS in 1978.

Set off for a day's cycling without any destination or route in mind. Eventually decided on lunch at the cafe in Shipley Country Park, and as I had used the Nutbrook Cycle Route on Thursday, chose a road route and happened to be passing the Cat and Fiddle. For the first time the drive gates were wide open! I rode up the drive intending to ask permission to view, but it is directly ahead of you in full sight, so it was a quick stop, visit and u-turn without disturbing the occupants. Was my closest un-logged pillar.

Gates were open, so I strolled up. Dog was in its pen, thank goodness. Did not dally to see any detail. The bloke collared me on the way back down the drive - but the conversation was very aimeable. Said they were trying to do up the windmill - I suggested a tea room and a visitors charge. He said the last time they had a party round, the next day they were robbed of much of their light farm machinery - the culprits were obviously casing the joint during the tour round the windmill. Why is called Cat and Fiddle, when the pub is about half a mile away? Obvious, the team making the pillar spent most of the day skiving off in the pub, they did not know the name of the hill, so the name was coined over beer. The gates are electric - they could have shut, trapping me up the drive - then what would I have done? Pam was in the car on the lane - she might not have seen me again - gone for dog food.

The owner runs a demolition business and the recovered object was merely placed on top of the trig. Good views for about 75% of the area. The windmill now has only one sail arm instead of two and looks a bit sad.

They probably thought it a little strange I asked to see a piece of concrete in a field rather than the historic windmill! The trig point looks well though the ground around it appears disturbed as if the trig may even have toppled at one stage. The trig point now doubles as a stand for a wind gauge (?). For those of you not wanting to disturb the owner then the trig can just about be seen over the hedge from the A6096 to the right of the house, look for the wind sock, its just behind that.
