Good parking by derelict house ND 1519 3596 (advised to start here by friendly farmer - happy for me to drive up from Houstry! Track soon ends by chickens and he drove up to re-advise me - wouldn't happen in England). So, from Millbuie - initial track soon ends and then its a boring slog over rough, wet moor

Overall approach from southeast. Used mapped riverside car park and picnic site by Dunbeath at ND159299. A good mapped footpath to the NW which passes through the Dunbeath Broch continues to ND153306 where the public road ends and the estate track begins. Followed the track past Lodebest and the walled cemetery to ND113335 then turned right and took a beeline route north over the hills until eventually reaching the summit. Pillar in good condition. Spider retains original OS centre cap with deep indented letters. Flush bracket faces SSW, compass measurement 193°. Vented through back sight hole. Full 360° panoramic view from trig.

Parked up at Boulfruich Wind Farm. Pillar is visible from here on its rounded bump of a hill about 2 2/3 miles distant. Direct route through pasture and moor with the Houstry Burn having to be forded. Wet underfoot in sections and although most of the terrain is quite benign there was a short section of tussocks about 20 mins in to the walk that slowed progress! Never a steep climb and wide open views. Head wind out and rain squalls made this a memorable day - good Flow Country weather! Same route back. Pillar in good condition with all fixings in place. Usual bird of prey evidence. On the whole 2 h 15min walk I saw 2 red deer, 1 red grouse, 1 wren, 1 snipe, 0 people and a raven. Oh and near the windfarm there is a ruined Iron Age settlement.

vgc, metal cap, deep letters. Grass/heather moorland, decent view including Morven group. From ESE, farm, track, pasture, ford burn then beeline: fair bit runnable.
