2nd trig of the day, the first being Moor Field. I approached from the Plodder Lane side, Up a horrible footpath (a mini stream first, then significant bogginess. As previously stated, the trig is in the next field, behind a hedge. The pallet had been 'tied' to the branches, somehow they were snapped, enabling me to squeeze through. The trig field was less boggy than previous photos on here (relief), Not particularly memorable views. I ticked it off and headed North through the housing estate and back towards Lostock train station.

Parked on St Helens Rd and followed the PROW for a short distance. The pillar is just the other side of a hedgerow in the adjoining field. Access was via a poorly fixed leaning gate with a timber pole accross the top. Not the easiest of gates to scale. Views were OK. The pillar was in generally good condition but the concrete was starting to break away in one corner and the centre for the spider was missing.

Parked at the top of Moorlands View (off St Helens Rd) where the FP leads to the open fields. Followed it round and then turned right at the T Junction. FP enters another field and then heads up to the right. At the style at the brow of the hill the pillar can be seen in the adjacent field. There is awkward access over an old pallet, but it is easier to carry on the FP down to the track and then jump the gate into the field and back up. There were some cows but they weren't really very threatening. Views were OK to the south but not really much to see in other directions.

Pillar is the wrong side of a secure hedge to allow a (legal) visit. Path directly south to Plodder Lane was very boggy even following a dry spell. Further south it is underwater to the extent that I disturbed a nesting duck!

Missing Plug. In very muddy location and not easily accessed. Follow the path up Cow Lane. The Public FP turns right then down the back of some houses. Climb a style then immediate left along the hendge. Go to the next style. Climb over and a pallet covers an opening in the hedgerow fence to the trig.

Parked at the top of Moorlands View and followed the Signed path around the back of the houses and along the wrong side of the hedge, which was easily crossed to enter the quagmire surrounding the trig, which sits in a field corner by the hedge and a gate, The Trig is in good condition , if a little pebbly , the cap and one sight hole are open , FB faces east views mainly of a hedge and two large storage tanks-definitely a Welly Bob Job

Parked in nearby housing estate to north and up Cow Lane (between houses). Turned onto very muddy paths to reach trig, which has quite nice views over Manchester

Residential parking due N. Hill first then walked round a very soggy and muddy cattle pasture to the trig. On a mission with Carole Engel so no details noted down. But photos indicate slight damage to the top screed with one spider arm end exposed; top cap missing, no plug.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 10th May 1940 costing £4.4s.3d. Computed as secondary triangulation station SD80/8 during 1945 and refixed in 1989. Levelled for height to class 1 precision at tertiary standards in 1963. Last maintained by the OS in June 1989. SITE VISIT: Approached from north. Parked in first available side street parking space (SD691066) although later found I could have parked nearer.Near easterly edge of grazing field. Followed back lanes and roads to mapped RoW which disappears through the houses before reaching the fields. Easiest to enter field from the north edge to avoid thick hedges. Pillar in good condition. Spider centre open. Flush bracket faces east, compass measurement 100°. Vented through north sight hole. Two short spans of distant view span from NW to NNE and SE to south. Part of a 24 trig stint around the northern outskirts of Manchester.

Frequently tread trig logs before visit. Not this time and decided didn't need to change into wellingtons and probably trainers ok. Mistake. Back to car and return with protected feet. Rename this summit trig 'Bolton quagmire' S2799 it's FB 'date'apart from being Alan Dawson's 47th on his trig walk of life, my Jamie,aka Trig Pillocksson was one day old!

Manages to make the nearby Salford UA top look even worse, good view if you like distribution sheds, some nice black sheep in the farm below. Though the weather doesn't help - path up from Plodder Lane is in disgraceful state used farm track to get back.

Mud what mud? On the fragrant Salford/Bolton borders - excitement grows later to bag the Salford UA top, think some of the houseowners have failed to realise the "Window Tax" was repealed.

Parked at the junction of Cow Lane and Westfield Road. Walked south to the track but instead of turning right went straight on for a few yards and squeezed through the barbed wire fence and then round to the trig. Undistinguished pillar in a muddy field.

Drove works van down private road,off Plodder Lane,and parked at mast near towers.Walked along hedge line to SW of towers,then N to pillar.Good job ground was frozen,would be very,very muddy in normal conditions.Pillar in good condition,coarse concrete form & more like pebble dash around top,no cap/plug & no sight holes open.Not bad views to NW.

ROW squeezed against hedge by new post and wire fence. Very wet and muddy in part. Pillar in adjacent field to ROW. Very rough finish, like pebble dashing. Wide ranging views.

Easy to find if approached from A579 and straight up Cow Lane until the fence around the water things is reached. Turn right off track and follow fence round to the right, and when you get to the next corner, the trig is visible over by the hedge. Slight damage to top corner of trig.

Up here today for Lincoln City's big day out at The Reebok Stadium. We lost, of course, but we wonh't forget the occasion! A chance to grab some trig points on the way to the game, starting with this one. Easy access via a footpath from the neighbouring housing estate and then across the snow to the pillar. It's slightly chipped on the top and the plug has gone. No paint. All sightholes below soil level or closed. There's probably a good view from here but today it was snowing and foggy so I couldn't see a thing!

Small chunk out of top but not quite deserving a 'slightly damaged'. Plug intact (raised lettering). E side of hedge but easy access from footpath if approached from S. No cows but two Llamas in next field but one. Beyond Cow Lane is the appropriately named Plodder Lane.

Good condition with original plug. Came up on the PFP from the south, but pillar in field next to the one with the path, so a bit of gate climbing. Cow lane is just to it's east, with much construction going on. Gate post with old OS level mark on Cow lane. Private

Spare 20 mins having driven down from Carlisle before a meeting so a good excuse to stretch legs before sitting down again. Northerly approach best with safe parking in a pleasant looking estate. beware though the trig is not in the field with the footpath and this field is best entered immediately after leaving the housing estate.
