The good news - a year later and there's no sign of the dead pheasant. What's not so clever is the positioning of a new fence post right by the pillar. If the strainer post was 10 inches further south west it would totally obscure the FB. Not entirely sure what if any purpose the new fence here actually serves? For the third time this afternoon we took the loppers to the encroaching hawthorn, so you can now get to the south east side of the TP and see the decent views towards Edinburgh.

Well, 17 days on and there is still a dead pheasant atop the pillar. Presumably it’s the same one, although it seemed freshly deceased and not obviously decomposing. Not that I inspected it too thoroughly! Without touching the bird, I could just make out that the pillar’s cap remains in place. Fine views northwards.

Good condition pillar beside field boundary. Excellent views. FB faces west-ish with no sightholes open. Cap present with sunken lettering.

Third visit. GPS would not settle for less than 22m accuracy, and the reading error was around double that. Heavy tree cover to south.

Revisit. The pillar is on the edge of an arable field, separated from crops by an unmapped farm track. The column is in good condition, but with facing starting to peel, no cracks. The spider retains its original OS plug with shallow engraved lettering. The flush bracket faces northwest.

First visit. To record FB number. The pillar was completed in September 1943 costing £4.15s.9d. Later in 1943 this marker was computed for triangulation as tertiary station NT48/T54 in the Edinburgh secondary block. The flush bracket was levelled for height to first class precision, tertiary standards in March 1960. This trig point was last maintained by the OS in August 1981.
