Second visit, different route, parked up on Elm Row in Galashiels Old Town. There's so many paths, tracks and Mountain Bike Trails over this hill it would be possible find an almost infinite number of different routes to the TP. Looking back to the pictures of my visit here in Nov 2019 Gala Hill was damaged quite badly by Storm Arwen and the storms that followed in the spring of 2022. There are a lot of gaps allowing glimpses of the town and surrounding hills whereas before the TP was surrounded by a solid curtain of foliage.

On a 6.54 mile circular walk. Incredible to see how close the trig was to the recent damage from Storm Arwen! Had to clamber over quite a lot of fallen trees to reach the pillar. A tree has obviously scraped it down the edge as it fell, but landed right next to the trig, touching it, but not squashing it!

Suspect I have run past this before when orienteering without even noticing, nice spot even without any views. Descent to west and along a stretch of road to rejoin SUW and back to car through Gala Policies.

An overcast day with low cloud making any of the higher hills a rather pointless endeavour as far as taking in views was concerned, not as issue with this woodland TP with no views on offer. Delightful woods, nice mix of pine and deciduous trees, with the birch’s and some oaks still hanging on to their remaining autumn colours. TP in good condition and very simple to find. We parked at Woodend and followed the contouring paths to the highest point of the hill. There are plenty of MTB tracks as well as the paths shown on the map to make accessing the route to the TP or back from it more direct.

Third visit, and not the only visitor here today. HISTORY: Pillar completed 21st May 1953, cost not on record. Levelled for height in 1956. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NT72/T53 in 1957. Last maintained by the OS in June 1977. SITE VISIT: Parked in overgrown locked gateway at NT490355 which which later became apparent as the unofficial turning point for neighbouring residents. One local drama queen performed a clumsy eleven point protest in front of my car presumably as a subtle hint. The GOML signs which were around here are now consigned to history, and kissing gate implies legitimate access. Mapped as Gala Hill, it is entirely wooded. Mild graffiti on the pillar but otherwise good. Spider retains OS centre cap with deep indented letters. Flush bracket faces NNW, ~336°. Vented through SW sight hole. Nice wooded hill on the outskirts of Galashiels. No views. GPS reading poor, probably due to trees.

Gala Hill is to the south of Galashiels, and just off the Southern Upland Way. Joined the SUW by Galashiels Academy, and followed it up on to the hill before cutting upwards along a farm track and then through the trees to the trig. A little graffiti on the pillar, but in good condition and with spider cap in place. No views from the trig, but nice view of the Eildon hills on the way up. No idea why this is called Gorgum and not Gala Hill. No mention of Gorgum on the map, and a quick Google search didn't turn up any references.
