A misty morning with a touch of frost, a slow, cold two hour ride for first stop of the day. Pulled in at car park on east side of road just south of the nearby water tower. First thought was to try and thaw out a bit and get some feeling back in my hands. Then decided to look for the pillar. Which took no time at all as there it was on the verge only twenty five metres away. Surprisingly good condition for an urban location with spider and cap in place and undamaged, good to see. Views only of houses and the road, unexciting. At least the sun was trying to come out.

For about a year I have been plotting a quick bag off the M1 whilst returning from London. And after a fair bit of research, yes I did it! No map either, so it did take a missed turn in the town or two. As it turns out it's actually on the roadside I was expecting it on the cricket field. Useful car park, but what are those narrow posts all about - take care! It never was a simple hobby......was chatting to a colleague while inspecting the trig - VGC, original plug. Sinking into the ground a bit, FB can just about be made out still.

A very easy ‘drive-by’ but in fact I parked in the adjacent carpark… A tight squeeze through the posts for a big car. This trig is in very good condition with all it’s metalwork intact… Probably because of it’s urban location rather than in spite of it. Unfortunately, my previously 100% reliable Canon A70 chose this time to chuck a wobbly and the photographs turned out to be rubbish, although I did manage to salvage a shot of the flush bracket.

The most amazing thing about this pillar is that considering it is in the open in the middle of a housing area it is remarkably unblemished. Other than one set of initials carved on it, it has suffered no vandalism. The ground it sits on must be rising over a period of time as it has now reaced the bottom of the plate and needed debris clearing from it to see the bottom. Logged at N51 45.817 W000 26.886
