(2376) Parked on Butt Hedge and took the PRoW to the pillar. Not quite a ten minute walk, and the going was pretty good and firm. One or two dog walkers met along the way. Pillars sits within a large copse - low surrounding fence pretty broken down, so that was no real obstacle. From there to the pillar the ground was easily moved across - picked a good time of year to visit then going by previous visitors undergrowth filled photos. Slight damaged to one of the corners of the top, but that aside all in good condition. Still retains its original centre cap. Pillar history: Built on the 18th of October 1937, at a cost of £4 11s 3d. Last maintained by the OS in March of 1975.

Another pillar long on the to-do list, and another great one to visit. I tried to park at the pull-in on Wetherby Road to cut the walking down, but couldn't get in, so parked up in Long Marston and followed the PROW south. As others have noted, it is easy farmland walking, and you're expecting this to be a hedge-bound pillar - but there is a large copse not on either 1:25k or 1:50k OS mapping, and the pillar is well hidden inside. There is a good worn trod and a knackered low fence to hop over before you're in the trees, and the trig sits in the middle of the copse a fair way in. Someone has cut a tree just to the right of the pillar, but it seems safe here - it's in pretty good condition except for a chunk missing from the top corner and slightly exposed foundations. Original cap. A good trig to visit in a great location, and very easy access, as you're nowhere near any buildings/farms or in view as you divert from the PROW.

2/4 Cycled from Poppleton trig. My map 1:25k 2000 edition didn't show woodland which now straddles the hedge the trig was near. Met a bloke and his dog who I thought was a local farmer and asked if it was his land, it wasn't. It turned out he had military background and had used trig pillars to align their big guns. Though local he wasn't aware of the trig and helped me find it. The woodland is used for rearing game birds so is fenced off, but it's lower on the E side at approx 495503. On the way he pointed out York Minster, the White Horse to the N and the Cromwell Tree associated with the nearby battle of Marston Moor. Worth an 8 for all that.

I'll have to go back!! For help of those without GPS to find it, count fence posts, from the northern end, down the west side of the woodland. Second trig during a 17 mile circular from Taddy. In a couple of years time this might be a bit of a beggar to find (certainly in summer). I came up from Long Marston along the ROW, on seeing the fenced plantation on the left I turned off the ROW and followed the field edge briefly to the fencing, here I turned to follow the fencing heading right (you could just as easily go left but by going right you are covered from view from the nearby farms). If approaching as I did from the ROW the building to the right that you can see the top chimneys of (as you rise the hill towards the trig) is an electricity sub-station and not a house. Plantation too high for any view from the trig today. No cars, on foot.
