Found parking a bit of a problem as gate seemed in use. Easy walk over the undulating ground to the pillar. All the sheep followed me thinking I was there to feed them. Sad to see the damage to the trig.

Third visit: Overall approach from NNE. Parked in layby on SE side of A698 at NT521157. Straight up steep slope to south corner of first field. Followed boundary lines around next two fields to trig which resides in the northmost corner of a the fourth grazing field. Malicious damage to pillar top in a failed attempt to remove spider. Damage similar to that on nearby Chapel Hill which was caused between 1991 and 1994. Pillar otherwise in very good order on a raised foundation. Spider retains original OS centre cap with deep indented letters. Flush bracket faces SSE, compass measurement 141. Vented through NE sight hole. Panoramic 135 view from west through north to northeast includes Gala Law, Drinkstone Hill, Muirfield, Eildon Mid Hill, Black Hill NT72, Minto Hill, Peniel Heugh and Rubers Law.

Parked on road to south, by the 197 spot height and followed the wiggly wall to the trig. The hilltop has been used a scrambling bike track and workmen were clearing some of the scrub.

Climbed up steep hill from lay-by and waded through knee-deep grass, nettles and thistles to reach the trig, but well worth the effort for the fantastic views across Hawick and beyond.

Nothing really to add other than to confirm that it is still there in the condition previously described. I see that there is a spot height some 10m higher in the same field - wonder why it was not located there.

I had been defeated twice previously with this one, once by the weather and once by mad cows. No problems this time as I parked in the lay-by to the north and slogged up the steep hill to the footpath running to the pillar keeping on the southern side of the stone wall. Decent views and worth a 7.

First visit. To record FB number. Pillar completed 12th July 1953 costing 12.16s.0d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NT72/T76 within the Jedburgh secondary block during 1957. Levelled for height to Class 2 precision in 1958. Last maintained by the OS in October 1986. Pretty sure the malicious damage to the top of the pillar had not occurred at the time of this visit.
