Parked on road to south, by the 197 spot height and followed the wiggly wall to the trig. The hilltop has been used a scrambling bike track and workmen were clearing some of the scrub.

Climbed up steep hill from lay-by and waded through knee-deep grass, nettles and thistles to reach the trig, but well worth the effort for the fantastic views across Hawick and beyond.

Nothing really to add other than to confirm that it is still there in the condition previously described. I see that there is a spot height some 10m higher in the same field - wonder why it was not located there.

I had been defeated twice previously with this one, once by the weather and once by mad cows. No problems this time as I parked in the lay-by to the north and slogged up the steep hill to the footpath running to the pillar keeping on the southern side of the stone wall. Decent views and worth a 7.

Second visit. For photographs and GPS reading. SITE VISIT: At the northmost corner of an empty grazing field. Malicious damage to pillar top in a failed attempt to remove spider. Damage similar to that on nearby Chapel Hill which was caused between 1991 and 1994. Pillar otherwise in very good order on a raised foundation. Spider retains OS centre plug with deep indented font. Flush bracket on SE face of pillar. Vented through NE sight hole. Views to Gala Law, Drinkstone Hill, Muirfield, Eildon Mid Hill, Black Hill NT72, Minto Hill, Peniel Heugh and Rubers Law.

First visit. To record FB number. The pillar was completed 12th July 1953 costing 12.16s.0d. In 1957 this marker was computed for triangulation as tertiary station NT72/T76 in the Jedburgh secondary block. Flush bracket S7579 was levelled for height in 1958. This trig point was last maintained by the OS in October 1986. Pretty sure the malicious damage to the top of the pillar had not occurred on this visit. GRP.
