A 6 mile loop to reach the trig but so well worth it. As with others, we first attempted a footpath but retreated and walked along the track before reaching the open field boundary. Crops in the field and thick claylike mud made it very slippy heading up the field which is steeper than it looks, we then pulled ourselves up the grass/tree lined bank onto the next crop filled muddy field and walked over to reach the trig. Base is broken but it's a stunning location, good views and definitely one of my favourite ones.

Through a gate directly west where the pillar can easily be seen standing tall on its plinth. A straightforward visit, up along a slippery muddy track, then left through a lush long- grassed field. All within sight and earshot of the M6 where I soon returned to continue my journey to Scotland. Pillar has its original cap, and one sight-hole open.

Parked on Green Lane. Walked up the road onto Pirehill Lane, which is a public right of way (PRoW). From the PRoW, turned right onto a path at grid reference SJ 89578 30421 which takes you all thew way into the field in which the pillar is located. No fences to negotiate using this route. Pillar sits on a breezeblock plinth, but is cracked around the flush bracket (FB), with cracks on all 4 sides at the level of the FB. Very good views, and the pillar can even be seen from the M6 motorway
