Parked in Pen y lan, through gate of field. No crops but hell of a state with all the rain lately so decided I didn't need to take in the view.

Just as we were in the area nipped down lane to this one knowing it was gone. Why? No idea really! Thought it would be cheating if I didn't at least look. Parked just at pull in near field where trig should have been, on Pen Y Lan road.... and....nothing. Over to Machen next where I know there is a trig!

Walked in from Michaelston-y-fedw on lane, mucky bridleway and short stretch of road to N end of "pillar" field. Crossed field on way marked track heading for Penylan farm ("farm" looked like a group of residential homes completely blocked off from my side). Shortly before big brown barn is a wide strip on RH side of track where rubble/stones off fields have been dumped in past, nothing recent. Even at this time of year it was all over grown and blanketed with dead growth. Thought I'd hit lucky on sighting the base of pillar shaped concrete but not upon closer inspection. Quite likely that lost pillar in amongst this lot. Returned across muddy stubble via GPS position of pillar on high point for views of the bright lights of Newport and Cardiff.

Parked in Pen-y-Lan on the minor road running SW to NE, walked across an arable field and onto the Mount which seems to be the site of a neolithic fortified position. The pillar was not present and no indication of exactly where it was. Low cloud so no vis, hence the low score.

Parked near the mast and then made my way to the position of the former trig on the supposed footpath. Unfortunatly the path had been planted over and did not exist so it was a case of trying to keep to the tramlines wherever possible. Kept an eye out in case it was in the hedge but no sign - not the right season to spot it anyway. It took me twice as long to get all the prickly hay seeds out of my socks as it did to walk to the trigs former position.
