Parked at the entrance to the field as we were tight for time. I made for the trig while Mrs A1M looked after the car, and then had to move it to the large layby mentioned in previous logs to let the farmer into the field.

I parked at se173945 huge layby and entrance to MOD land. A short walk east on road then entered field via a metal gate on south side of road. Easy access across field passing a pond. Pillar situated within a fenced off area. Spider plug intact.Flush bracket faces south.

Whilst having a beer in the Greyhound at Hackforth realised that this pillar was on the way home. Parked up in the entrance to the field, through the gate and a quick walk along the farm track before diverting off through the long grass to the copse. Hopped over the barbed wire fencing and beat down the nettles to reach the pillar. I had shorts on so legs got stung a bit, but that's not the trauma it was when I was a kid. Less than 10 minutes and I didn't rush it.

Not too hard to reach.

Parked in entrance to tank range, short walk along road then good track up to trig. Trig is in copse surrounded by nettles.

Parked in the tank entrance to the ranges and walked up the road to a track over the fields. Trig easily spotted in the fenced off copse. Glad I got here before the nettles have started to grow! Pillar in very good condition with some dates on the plug. Great views on a lovely sunny day.

Walked up the bridleway from Hunton, turned left on Hawkswell Lane and then left through the field gate just past Red House. The trig sits within its own little fenced-off copse a couple of hundred yards uphill from the gate, and there is a good clear track straight to it. A quick hop over the low barbed wire and a wade through the nettles and brash and you're there. The pillar is in excellent condition and commands fine views away from the trees. No crops or livestock disturbed and returned the same way.

lovely location for this pillar,took the fp past the pond ,veered off in the next field and followed fenceline to the summit hopping over two relatively low wire fences,nice views,no-one around today

HISTORY: Pillar completed 12th April 1954 costing £13.16s.6d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station SE38/T71 in 1955. Levelled for height also in 1955. Last maintained by the OS in March 1975. SITE VISIT: Approached from northwest. Parked in east end of layby, north side of unclassified road by junction with military road at SE175945. Walked road east for ~300m then through open grazing field gate following vehicle tracks to next field south and keeping to west boundary to top. In a copse full on nettles. Pillar in good condition. Spider retains original OS centre cap with deep indented letters. Flush bracket faces NNW, ~346°. Vented through SE sight hole. Aspects are two short panoramas running 45° from east to ESE and 90° from south to west. Remainder is blocked by surrounding trees.

Easy enough to find. Park in the large layby which is at the entrance to the Catterick MoD training area. Walk along road carefully as the cars are fast along here. Climb over the gate and follow up to a gap in a wall then aim over to the enclosure of trees. Step up a ruined stone wall and clamber over wooden fence and wire fence into enclosure well protected an nettles in summer at least. Fabulous views east to the N.Yorks Moors and south to the Pennines.

Pillar situated within a small enclosure of spruce trees...very appropriate for my visit on Christmas day! Plug intact with indented lettering. Good views of North York Moors and Wensleydale.
