Parked in A712 layby NX52217317 followed forest track to just short of burn crossing at NX5186972177, then followed a newly created tracked vehicle track through the clear fell debris. Very wet! This track leads ultimately to an old ride running around the fell at around 250m. Then an upward slog through tussock grass and heather to the south western top. Visibility was reduced due to rain and sleet for the last trudge to the Pillar. Nicely coated with a variety of mosses. Clatteringshaws and Loch Grannochlochs just visible in the haze. A more direct route was taken for the return but no less arduous!

Exactly 5 miles there and back from entrance to forest track on A712 just by TP7531 the Knocknevis rivet (which due to the worst planning ever I didn't seek out until the following day). Looked simple enough route on paper, follow track parallel with Pullaugh Burn (passing a v impressive waterfall) till track swings W, then S, and ascend W up marked firebreak ENE of cairn. Except the firebreak is for the first half of its length a moss covered swamp; and for its top half entirely impassable due to windblown trees (see photo). So a lot of scrambling up through the trees going over, under and around a maze of horizontal trunks, branches, root balls and great water filled holes that the roots had been ripped and tipped out of. So an added point today for the unexpected adventure and full body workout; sadly no views from the top though given the forecast none were expected. Considerably easier on descent to find the line of least resistance back down the firebreak.

From Brockloch car park, following Clochandighter's route. There's been a lot of felling since his visit, but the firebreak is still visible. Once off the firebreak battle commences with awful deep and boggy tussocks.

First stop on a 22k linear walk from Brocklock Bridge to Gatehouse rly stn with a small group of fellow baggers at the 2018 Newton Stewart Triggers Meet. Pillar commands a wide panorama on open fell. Another construct with no FB - OS, what were you thinking of! Top cap missing, composite plug replacement. Sight holes not noted.

un74 - Overall approach from the northwest. Free forest car park by the A712 at NX522731. Followed the track south to NX522728 then up a forest break to open hill, and eastwards through tussocky grass and heather to the summit. Heather clad top with rock slab summit. The pillar is in good condition. The spider centre is plugged with smooth brown plaster. This column was built without a flush bracket. The two open sight holes face west (266°) and south. Full 360° panorama from the top.
