Grass verge parking due E, at road junction. Good track leads off, crossing the Siss Cross Road at NZ 7048 1057. Track leads on for a while, past obvious standing stone, then veered off across easy heather moorland. Pillar sits ~100m NW of the hill summit. Original centre cap retained, lightly indented lettering; front sight hole sealed, other 3 open. Good moorland views.

We parked up on the hardstanding at 'Robin Hood's Butts' (NZ 71266 11537) and made our way west along a good shooting track. A few trods weave through the heather to reach the pillar; it is in very good condition, with an original cap, albeit with the usual weathering and someone has daubed fluorescent paint on the raised parts of the flush bracket. Good views in all directions. Pillar #50 for my little helper, and we returned the same way for a celebratory cuppa at the car.

Visited whilst on way up to Staithes with the Mrs and eldest daughter,they dropped me off on way to Danby Beacon & picked me up on the way back. Fantastic if somewhat grey misty views today.

Glorious visit 45 mins after sunset and then again 20 mins after sunrise the next morning. Almost perfect trig with nice subtle and beautiful texturing and patterns with a little lichen on the sides.

An evening visit from the nearby pub. Lots of grouse on the moor. Also plenty of heather burning all round. The air was thick with the smoke although the fires were miles away. Centre plug still in situ.

I see some way that they have driven to this pillar. I must say that I wouldn't fancy it in a Renault Clio... And the track passes 0.2 of a mile from the pillar leaving a walk through heather without an obvious path for the rest of the way. But the views were good, even if the cold south easterly wasn't - and someone had daubed green paint on the plate which didn't aid reading it...

Cycled complete length of unsealed road/track from NZ713116 to NZ679108 about 3.5km. Short walk onto heather to pillar. Feels a lot more remote than it actually is. Warm day with sunny intervals, but distant views subject to grey out.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 25th September 1947 costing £7.2s.0d. Computed as secondary triangulation station NZ42/52 within the Middlesborough Block during 1948. Levelled for height in 1959. Last maintained by the OS in May 1981. SITE VISIT: Overall approach from NNE. Parked on section of old road just off north of A171 at NZ705119. Gate onto access land at south side of A171 at NZ701120. Followed mapped RoW south to intersection then west along track to highpoint and SW to top. Pillar in good condition. Spider retains original OS centre cap with shallow engraved letters. Flush bracket faces north, ~353°. Vented through three sight holes, FB face plugged, innards blocked with debris. Full 360° open outlook.

Parked in the lay-by on the north side of the A171. Would have been easier to park on the south side at NZ 70194 12077. Walked on the track south to the point where it crosses track to the east – then through heather south to the trigpoint. Another remote North York Moors trigpoint. Good views all round including Freeborough Hill.

For this one, there’s easy parking at the eastern end of the track where the road turns a corner. From there it’s about a 1 mile, fairly level walk along the track and then a couple of hundred yards across the moor to the pillar. If you have a 4x4, you could probably drive to the closest point on the track but you’ll need some serious ground clearance as the tyre ruts are very deep in places. A couple of off-road motorbikes came along while I was walking and they seemed to be having fun. The pillar, located on a small rise, is in good condition with all the metalwork in place. You can see a long way in all directions but the flat(ish), heather covered moor isn’t exactly a spectacular view.

Appalling weather so was tempted to try the byway - despite the 'Not Suitable' signs. Got the car about 400m with several bangs below before I found somewhere flat enough to turn round. A saving of 800m. And now I read the earlier logs. Doh!

A misty walk along the much-rutted track from the road. Clearly, many have ignored the sign warning of unsuitability for motor vehicles. A day when my GPS was essential - I couldn't see this TP until quite close.
