If you ain't already 'bagged' it, an easy find thanx to Stew B...Park on Jubilee Road at GR 019 258 & taking a right & crossing the road 'make' for the 'Eddie Stobart kiosk' to locate the green metal fencing left of the kiosk. Take a total of 45 strides from the fencing, across the road to the kiosk & from the kiosk across the road beyond it. Look out for a two foot length metal bar purposefully placed by Stew B along the kerbing on the grass side & 'go-in' under the tree there. I got real low to 'duck-under' the fallen tree rather than trying to climb over it, not quite, but not far off a crawl. Getting in under the tree wasn't too difficult & once under it, there's a fair bit of room at the back of it to move around, though not quite enough for a 12 foot snooker table! To be honest now you know where to make your entrance, you could omit the Jubilee Road park & park right in front of the metal bar. I doubt the bar will move, being heavy & having a piece protruding from one side I stuck into the grass...Real interesting to know that the trig was slate-clad on all sides, had a silver finale on top & bore a plaque referencing its inauguration in 1970 by Harold Wilson. Described as a benchmark rather than a trig, there being a finale atop of the thing I very much doubt it ever had a 'spider' at all. A rather splendid 'piece' of history I think 'making' its finding all the more worthwhile. Hope my 'blog' inspires YOU to go search it out. I absolutely love these sort'a trigs, hidden, harder to find & so satusfying when you have!

Parked up in the entrance to the old bus works / Stobart depot. No one around so walked tot he approx. area of the trig, looked around and deduced it must be in the trees somewhere. A toppled tree made it difficult to see, and even a bit tricky to get to. It was still as last reported but I rolled it over to see if the FB was on the underside, alas not. Was going to roll it back, but thought I'd leave just to give the poor thing a change of outlook. It's a pretty miserable location, but the fact that one of the iconic sights of my youth emanated from there granted it an extra interest point. No height is given, but I make it to be around 130m.

Parked in the industrial estate opposite. The fallen tree made it a wet and slippery crawl to get to the trig.

Impossible to fully verify due to rain, dense - ish wet foliage and dusk conditions but unlikely to have been moved further. Returned this morning to look. Still there but it's complete and toppled not remains (wrongly detailed) . Sad dead trig in its final resting place. It'll never be moved.

Drove through works entrance and parked opposite trig point. The factory looks a bit run down with very little activity. No personnel in the security office, closed. This is a very sad trig point with no visible metal work, no sight holes ,no central tube,

Pillar is in a sorry state; pushed off it's base and shorn of it's slate cladding. The interesting top is still by it's side.If anyone is going to rescue/ restore this piece of 1970s political history, they'll have to be quick.

The pillar has been broken away from its base and the plaque together with the flush bracket been removed. A very sad sight. Pictures to follow when I return from holiday. I asked at Stobart's office but had no luck. There is a pickaxe by the vandalised trig.

Odd looking pillar with slate slab cladding the 4 sides and top - one slab missing and the top slab loose. Located to RHS of the entrance to what is now an Eddie Stobart truck yard, tucked away in the mature shrubbery but easily accessible. Inscription names it as a 'Bench Mark' set up by Prime Minister Harold Wilson on 20 Feb 1970. So he didn't just dedicate it, he set it up. An excellent example of manual labour! Drove in and parked with the wagons, a few drivers around, no-one seemed interested in me. ***Re-visited 13 Jan 2019. Pillar has been toppled, cladding gone, no visible FB; possible it's on the underside.

Odd pillar indeed! It's faced with slate and has the British Leyland logo on it plus inscription about Harold Wilson opening the factory in the grounds of which the pillar sits. The yard is currently an Eddie Stobart depot with the trig immediately to the right on entering the yard. One side of the pillar's facing is gone and the top is loose. No sightholes, FB faces SW-ish

Neither a run of the mill trig, or location. Felt like a ghost town. Top loose, side panel missing. Can't help but be worried that some local toe-rag will help himself to remaining slate panels. What ever your political persuasion it would surely be good to preserve inscription slab.

I'm marking this as damaged because the left hand side slate panel has been removed. I had a quick look around the site to see if it had been dumped nearby but couldn't find it. The top is also completely detached (you can just lift it off). What a forlorn state this once magnificent pillar is in.

I marked the pillar down as 'slightly damaged' because the pieces of slate have twisted slightly, and there is a chip out of one of them.

In Stobart lorry yard. Drove past old gatehouse, turn right and praked next to pillar. In an overgrown landscaped garden area. unfortunatly usd as a toilet area for the overnighting lorry drivers. Despite this, the site is unusual and worth a visit, a slate pillar opened by a prime minister.

vgc, built or cladded in Skiddaw slate, with surrounding area paved with slate slabs arranged radially. Instead of a spider is a raised boss, with a covering neatly bolted on. A few Stobart truckers around but if they saw me they werent much bothered. NY 02113 25764 +/- 3.2m: given OS gr puts it W side of road - very well done to dal for finding it. According to bench-marks.org.uk, OS descr reads "Leyland National Works [Special Job No. 0186]; stone pillar, works, NE side of road". Not mentioned on OS trigs archive. Just a ceremonial installation?

In shrubbery and under trees, possibly the cause of poor GPS readings. Behind the trig pillar there is a symbolic example of the fallen British Empire. At least the buildings are still being put to good use. Access to this pillar is unhindered. One wonders how the Ordnance Survey got involved here.

The pillar is hidden from the road by a bank covered with bushes and small trees. Go through the right hand side of the unmanned security gate on the NE side of the road. Turn immediately right and after a few yards the 'trig' is on a clear gravelled area to the right. The pillar bears the following engraving: 'This Bench Mark was set up by the Prime Minister The Rt Hon Harold Wilson OBE MP to inaugurate construction of this factory on the 20th February 1970', along with the Leyland National symbol. The engraving and FB face the SW. The former Leyland National works is now occupied by Eddie Stobbart lorries.
