We enjoyed a fantastic blustery walk along The Headland Way from Speeton, with roe deer, brown hares and myriad seabirds for company. First time spotting gannets for me, which was a real treat. The pillar commands a wonderful position on the clifftop, with stunning sea views and especially back over to Filey. It's in a very weathered state, with a fair chunk of spalling to the top and an asphalt cap. The flush bracket has also been painted with a thick coat. None of this detracts at all from what is a magnificent pillar visit!

Should have been extensive sea views but for the persistent sea fog that encroached only a short way inland leaving not even a view to bottom of the cliffs ~450ft below. Pillar sits only a short way back from the cliff edge, there is some damage to the top screed; centre cap missing, asphalt plug replacement; LHD side sight hole open.

The church car park in Speeton is the closest place to park. A small donation in the box is all that’s asked. From there, it’s about half a mile downhill to the Coast Path. A gentle climb of another mile and a quarter will take you to the pillar, perched on the obvious high point. It was bright and sunny as I enjoyed the walk; I never saw another soul all the while I was out. As I reached the pillar, I looked back the way I’d come and saw that the rain had crept up behind me and I was obviously going to get very wet on the way back…. Bummer! The pillar is missing it’s centre plug and some of the cement screed on the top but apart from that, it’s not in bad condition considering it’s exposed location. It carries the usual second OS plaque indicating that it’s now a ‘passive station’. As one would expect, the view over Filey Bay is excellent. The inland view is relatively flat farmland. It did indeed rain on the way back but my waterproof jacket kept most of it at bay. I did use the little church to change my wet trousers for a dry pair when I got back to the car, though. Another quid in the box should keep big G happy.

The pillar is sited between a fieldside footpath and the edge of the cliffs; it has peeling white paint, an asphalt plug, an OS GPS plate, and FB S6326; a thin layer of concrete is missing from a top corner of the pillar. The site was reached from cliff top footpaths from the car park next to Speeton Church. The coast to the north can be seen to beyond Scarborough. Inland the North York Moors are on the northern horizon but the countryside in the vicinity is the large flat upland fields of the Yorkshire Wolds. Peering over the cliff edge reveals seabirds circling below. The cliffs are part of the Flamborough Head SSSI and Heritage Coast for their geology and wildlife.
