Managed to find this one on the second visit after checking on previous finders photos. Don't think I've ever visited a harbour wall before that has so many random bits of iron work set in it!

Simple find with GPS and torch. Night time visit so lots of twinkling lights across the harbour. Whitehaven looks attractive when you can't see it!

Found it as described - I used the rivet by the drain as a marker. Some construction work on the pier may restrict access.

A needle in a haystack. A better photo to show the exact location.

Yes, agree with jonglew and asbown, standard hemispherical OS bolt, vgc, also a smaller bolt 4m nearer to top of steps, at edge of drainage channel, slightly damaged and presumably not OS

Have to concur with asbown below, all the other photos for this bolt are not the bolt but of the residue of one of the railing uprights - sorry guys, you've been looking at the wrong thing. The actual bolt is the standard 2" diameter and of the usual bronze-like metal and is approx 2.5m in from the edge of the quay. I paced out each side the 'pseudo bolt' and can confirm there are bolt-like items along the quay-side at regular intervals confirming they are the remains of the old railings. The actual bolt has some oxidation, but imho should be re-classified as 'good'.

UPDATE: see 4 Aug 2013 this log incorrectly describes a metal bracket/bolt/fencestump as the trigmark. The actual mark is 2M from the quayside as has been described by subsequnet visitors

West pier bolt my GPS indicates the reported location of bolt is 1 m to the right. clearly small navigation errors can have big consequences
