Visited on way down from Jerusalem, also got the 1GL Bolt on the Keep great find Dave. Off to the Crown and Cushion now for a well earned pint of Stowford Press. A few BMs before the 15.32 train back to Skipton, a cracking day out in brilliant weather.

Walked up at night to photograph the keep found bonus 1 gl bolt missed by many top loggers.

GR indicates the bolt is on the 12thC keep (Caeser's Tower) at Appleby Castle, a Grade I listed building and a wedding venue. All gates etc open today although castle was closed to the public. Wandered in and did a circuit of the keep. It all looks in good condition and signage indicates it will open to the public at some point. Whether renovations have involved a new roof and whether the bolt has survived will possibly be known in the near future.

Not sure how this would have worked as a trig point as we walked around the whole perimeter of the castle without being able to see it other than a little glimpse through the trees!

It looks like castle can now be accessed if you're willing to hand over a substantial sum of cash and listen to the guide droning on for 90 mins. Otherwise, just stare through the gates.

Tower still has scaffolding. Surrounded by trees - difficult to see.

The castle is totally inaccessible, the gates are padlocked shut and it is still surrounded by scaffolding. It looks like it will be a long time before any access is possible. Appleby is a nice little town.

NY71 004 BOLT. The tower has been covered in tarpaulin for several years. Now surrounded by scaffolding. According to a display board the tower was closed to the public in 2004 due to disrepair, various redevelopment plans proposed but subsequently rejected by English Heritage and the various conservation bodies. It would appear as though some aggreement has been reached.
