Evening visit to town but been to Abbey several times over the years.

Flagstaff clearly visible on top of the abbey. Beautiful old building and surrounding grounds

Abbey Church of St Mary, dedicated to St Mary and St Eldrida (according to English Heritage), Grade I listed. 12thC on probable 907 foundations. A fine looking building. OS records flagstaff and vane as extant components of this trig. Tower roof access normally ok when verger is on site - but not on Tuesdays, his day off.

A favourite building of mine and a fine example of Norman architecture, grand in scale and rich in detail. After the dissolution of the monasteries the abbey was sold to the people of Romsey as its parish church for £100.00. Its treasures include two Saxon roods. Have enjoyed many classical concerts, Mountbatten School's Christmas Carol services here, and most memorable of all my brother playing a starring role in Twelfth Night (in the Abbey grounds.) Have only just discovered its intersected station status.

SU31 T322 VANE, FLAGSTAFF, BOLT and OLD TRIG. Bolt and old trig reported destroyed 03/96. Parish church of St Mary and St Ethelflaeda. Cut BM with bolt to left of gate, east facing.
