Saved by an enterprising villager and sat at the end of his driveway. Beware of where you park, I was accosted by a have a go hero for pulling up on the road near his house. After I politely mentioned the trig and being interested in the history his attitude changed and I was told of its past and relocation from the local motorway services site. Then he reminded me not to park on the road outside his house even if I wanted to go and look at it. He proudly mentioned the 'he used to be an activist you know', I could hear scared rice puddings everywhere!!! He did suggest I go and talk to Jim, the guy who rescued it, I would have loved to but it was late and I didn't want to disturb him. I was also told that before taking any photos, that I should ask the owner if it was allowed... I'm a rebel so took photos anyway 8) @Jim - thank you for rescuing this one. Lovely scenic village and appreciate what you've done with the trig.

moved from the site of the services that are now next to the M1. Sitting proudly on the road way at no.20 Clements Gate, delight to see it and a worthy diversion from my route. Enjoyed a cup of coffee and a brief natter, in their lovely kitchen, with Jim and Carly. He not only rescued the trig pillar but the house they live in which was recommended for demolition when Jim took on the courageous task of buying it and renovating it. Lovely couple. Unlike the Elgin Marbles [maybe?], the mystery of how S1634 migrated to its present position in the conservation village of Diseworth is easily explained. However, but for your interest on the subject of trig. points in general - and your specific enquiry about trig. point S1634 in particular - the history of the move would otherwise have been lost.  As far as I know, this note, detailing the background, will be the only written record that exits to explain the mystery. The move actually occurred in 1998, now some 25 years ago. To the best of my knowledge no written record from any party was ever made of the event. In the intervening years most of those involved, there were few anyway, have either moved on or have long since forgotten about it. The process started some time before 1998 when the motorway service provider, Granada acquired sufficient land from a local farming family to build a service station to cater for M1 traffic. This land included the field in which S1634 was situated. Despite fierce opposition from the nearby villagers of Diseworth, who feared that the building of this service station would create a precedent for further loss of farmland to industrial development around the village [how prescient was that fear - but that's another story!] planning permission was granted and work on the site began in 1998. This work included construction on the field occupied by S1634 - which was designated to become the lorry park for the service station. It seemed to me to be worth making enquiries as to what was to happen to S1634 given that it was now going to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. It was, after all, a bit of a local landmark and well known to hikers and dog walkers alike so it seemed to be a good idea to 'save' it. I contacted Ordinance Survey in Southampton [by telephone] to ask them what was to be its destiny. I gained the impression that no one there had thought about this and that they weren't that bothered about it anyway. I asked if I could have it and the answer was yes I could but I'd have to put a notice on it dissociating Ordinance Survey from its new position. I then approached our Parish Council to suggest that S1634 be placed on the grass verge outside the Bull and Swan pub [sadly now two private dwellings] at the main crossroads in the centre of the village. The P.C. were not interested in this proposal which would anyway be too difficult, they said,  because Highways Authority would have to become involved, thus generating endless paperwork, risk assessments, etc. So what to do? Work was continuing apace up at the Granada site and I thought that I ought to get up there and secure the item before it disappeared. Along with a good friend of mine, Alan, we sought out the works foreman,  eventually found hiding out in a hut set amongst great mounds of earth, trenches, diggers and other heavy construction equipment. Mr. Foreman seemed totally oblivious to both the trig. point and its destiny but he seemed like a nice chap and he was clearly willing to humour us for a while - got to keep the local peasants on side, and all that.  After a bit of walking around and searching we found S1634. Looking very forlorn and sad, it lay on its side in a slurry of clay. It was already part covered in spoil and neglect and in the world of construction it was no more than a heavy lump of inconvenient concrete. It didn't take a genius to work out that it would soon be interred in a deep hole in Mother Earth and so be lost for all eternity - without either thought or ceremony.  It really was only luck that saved the day. 24 hours later and it would have been too late, S1634 would have been under the lorry park at what is now the MOTO Service Station at Junction 23A on the M1, having suffered the same fate as Richard 111 in the Leicester car park in 1485. Mr. Foreman, continuing with his positive public relations exercise towards angry Diseworth residents, offered to load S1634 into a digger and drive it over to the village that afternoon - where did we want it delivered? This rather caught both of us out with our trousers down, we hadn't expected such an immediate and positive response and we hadn't thought that bit through. Both Alan and I thought that S1634 should be visible to villagers and walkers but where to put it? In the end we decided that the best thing to do was to take up the immediate offer, get S1634 off the building site and temporarily put it next to the drive at my house. We could then figure out something more suitable at a later date.  That was 25 years ago and S1634 is yet to be moved to a more permanant site. Truth to tell, I doubt that it will move again. S1634 seems to be more than happy to reside where it does and anyway it's too heavy to contemplate another relocation.  Jim Snee As a postscript, like finding a final resting place for S1634, the plaque the O.S. asked me to put on it is still a work in progress. I penned the wording for said plaque, on schedule, 25 years ago and wrote to Garman [the Sat Nav people] to ask them to 'sponsor' it but I never got a reply! The plaque reads as follows:- Beware S1634 This trig. point is an ex trig.point. It is no more. It is not charted and has no cartographical purpose or accuracy. It was formerly sited at MR129 465253, now part of the lorry park at the Motorway Service Station to the N.E. of the village. At that location it marked a spot height of 93 metres AMSL. It was donated by Ordinance Survey in October 1998 and was re-sited here to remind villagers and walkers of views once enjoyed and also for the benefit of our dog population  who are much relieved - frequently. This Trig. Point now stands at N52.48.982 W001.19.549 at 66 metres AMSL I know this because my Garmin Sat Nav tells me.

Like others before me, I just couldn't resist having a peep as this, as I had tried twice before to furtively scour the Service Area. I would very much like to know how RoPeHe managed to find this as it's on a deadend lane so passing traffic doesn't exist!! Anyway, apart from a couple of chipped top edges it's fine! Original plug with slightly-indented letters. S sighthole closed, the others open. No paint. Quietly residing on the lane-side.

The pillar is "Definitely missing" from its original location SK 46488 25241, but is in "Good" condition, complete with Flush Bracket, Spider and Plug, just over 1km away at the side of Clements Gate in the village of Diseworth. I don't know whether "Toppled or moved" quite had this sort of thing in mind - maybe we need a new category of "Relocated" - but then a condition qualifier would still be necessary! By the way, thanks to Jon Rouse via Trigonomy for pointing the way to its new location.

I needed my best anorak on to bag this one. There I was wandering around the corner of a Service Station knowing already that what I was looking for was not there. I thought I discovered the base of the old trig at one stage but it turned out to be a concrete covering for an electrical cable conduit. I did discover two things. This is quite a well landscaped Service Station compared to some with a woodland area planted near where the trig used to be. Secondly it made me realise that if there is a value to a waste stream then a real industry springs up. The pallet recycling operation set up in the corner of this Service Station valued its pallets so much that they are chained up to prevent further recycling taking place.

Good view over the M1 and the runways at East Midlands Airport if you like that sort of thing.......
