See also notes on Hermitage page. Unusual, read other logs beforehand. South west corner of perimeter fence about two hundred meters from the road, past the groups of three then seven Vanessa pillars. Noted FB higher up than the recess which is empty. Not easily accessible and not worth it as lots of barbed wire. MOD would probably be quite grumpy about it too. Viewed from over the fence. Not meant to take unauthorised photographs. Have included the nearby seven Vanessa pillars as they don’t have a separate page.

All quiet here this morning, with no other walkers about, or any soldiers on the other side of the fence. Strange that this pillar has only recently been discovered. Then off to a cracking game of football at the County Ground, 2-1 to the Robins v the Stags, with the winner coming in the 93rd minute. Glorious & joyous! Who needs the Premier League? Such an enjoyable day.

Located between old and new security fencing at the Army's Denison Barracks, which houses the 77th Brigade which quote 'combat(s) new forms of warfare in the information environment for the defence of the UK and its overseas territories'. The pillar is the last in a line of 12 along that stretch of the perimeter fencing and will date from the 1960's when the army consolidated all military survey activities at the one location, with 42 Engineer Regiment (Geographic) being formed here in 1987. The pillar is peculiar in that the FB is located much higher up the pillar than normal, although there is provision for it at the usual place, so one can speculate the army used an OS Hotine former. The top has a standard spider, with a standard OS centre cap that has 3 holes drilled in a line at its centre. Access is awkward being within the 2 sets of perimter fencing, although it can be viewed from outwith. I parked on Priors Court Road, took the RoW that runs alongside the M4, so approaching from the SW and not attracting any security intervention. The first pillar, to the north, at SU 49526 73268, is also very close to the old, outer, security fencing and can be viewed from less than a metre away, The intervening 10 pillars are upended concrete tubes filled with concrete, some, maybe all, have a spider, but no flush brackets have been seen. See also TP3743 Hermitage.

Hotine pillar at SW corner of playing field just inside outer fence. Standard spider retaining standard metal cap with wide raised letters. Garmin lat long 51.45375 N, 1.28931 W, 109m elevation, OS website coordinate transformation tool converts as 49477 72991 (Garmin 49479 72997, their OSGB transformation isn't accurate). A line of 7 cylindrical pillars strung out to N, just inside outer fence. The 6th has a standard spider, no cap. The others may have too but their tops underwater. I found another (12th!) pillar, just inside NW corner of outer fence, slender concrete pillar with threaded bolt instead of spider - see my Hermitage log. Questioned by the military on my way out. Despite being on PRoW and there being no indication it's a military site.
Top cap Wide raised letters, not clear from photo (phone camera on full zoom)

I am indebted to MylesM for finding this. I'd looked at this location on Google Maps when the three spidery pillars (cf. TP25824) were first logged, and noticed there were what appeared to be additional cylindrical pillars to the south of the three previously reported. As Hermitage is practically on my doorstep, I'd always meant to have a look, but never did... until I saw his post. Yep, there's a previously un-reported Hotine pillar on the wrong side of the chain link fence at the sharp right hand bend in the track. I have no tech to tell me the grid reference, but the one I've provided should be close enough. There are also seven other cylindrical pillars along the way, which (probably) all have spiders atop them, too (could only confirm a couple of them do, due to puddles of rainwater, and the fact that the pillars are a lot taller than I'd anticipated!). The Hotine pillar carries flush bracket S3210 in the middle of its east face, some way above the recess that you'd expect find the FB in. Being in the low-ish three thousands, the S is raised above the number. It's in good condition, it's right up against the fence, but it doesn't have a great deal by way of a view, which is a pity because I'd like to have scored it a bit higher. Still... superb find, Mr. M - I salute you!
