2nd visit, to take Grid Ref reading. The pillar is exactly as it was 5 years ago, but the walk to it is not! All the forest S of Loch Garbad has either been or still is being felled. The ride through the forest to get from the Loch to the TP is the line the felling extends to, so effectively you simply walk E along the tree line until Cnoc na Garbad starts to go uphill, and its a lot easier from that point to go into the trees and walk up a carpet of moss and pine needles than the tussocky, bramble infested ride. The extensive area of of brash is not attractive, but it has opened up a terrific view S across Pladda Island to Ailsa Craig. Sadly this view can still not yet be seen from the pillar!

Fourth of the day. Followed Arran Trigman's route up to the loch and east along the firebreak to the edge of the field. At this point it seems finding the TP is going to be problematic, however hold your nerve, stick to the advice given and use your innate sense of 'keep going up' and its actually a very simple find in the end.

From Auchenhaw Wood car park (NS 0192 2170). Access track for Ballymeanochglen then good FP to Loch Garbad. Peeled off SE onto a fire break 100m before the loch; 'path' deteriorates at the forest boundary, but push on up a steep slope to the trig. Pillar retains an original top cap, raised lettering; front sight hole open, rear plug degrading. Nice coat of white paint, suffering from forest greening. No views. My final trig on Arran.

Parked at waterfall car park to the south then followed forest tracks towards Loch Garbad where I 'enjoyed myself' nearly falling in the loch getting a geocache down a slippy bank in a 'cliff face'. Then retraced my steps to the picnic bench and down the path to the fire break I'd spotted on the way up, followed this firebreak until I reached the field which I hoped contained the trigpoint but I still had 190m to go, eventually spotted a wee path through the conifers and was soon near the trigpoint which I then spotted shining out with it's white coat. Took a track through the conifers direct from the trigpoint to the field, much easier to spot on the way back. Waterfall and library are well worth a look.

Parked at waterfall car park to the south then followed forest tracks towards Loch Garbad but 100yds before the loch you will see a fire break to your right, follow this firebreak untill you reach the field, go near to end of field then follow the steep heather climb untill you reach the dense forest and follow the tree line to the right for about 100yds. The trig is 35m inside the forest and is easilly seen.

Lovely green tunnel in the trees, to walk through, near the top of the hill, on the way to this trig , delicate fronds of vegetation hanging down and lots of fairytale red and white toadstools underfoot.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 29th February 1956 costing £42.18s.4d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NS04/T34 in 1956. Levelled for height also in 1956. Last maintained by the OS in May 1978. SITE VISIT: Overall approach from SSW. Started from mapped car park at NS018217, followed mapped track/path to north side of gorge then unmapped path along forest edge to NS022228 where another mapped track leads to Loch Garbad. Around 150m short of the loch, turning due east, using a compass, a straight line through dense woods crossing one fire break leads to the conifer clad summit of Cnoc na Garbad. Pillar in good condition, freshly painted white, but signs of potential mossing and flaking due to being permanently damp in the woods. Spider retains original OS centre cap with raised large narrow letters. Flush bracket faces south ~177°. Vented through sight hole on FB face. Would have enjoyed good views east and south out to sea but any outlook from the trig has been lost to the woods. Descended NNE through woods for a distance 1.2km through every imaginable hazard, using compass to reach the footbridge at NS028249.

Metal cap, wide raised letters. Near E edge of fairly dense spruce: GPS took me straight to it. From S, car park at NS021218, good track with nice view of Eas Mor. From halfway point followed edge of boggy pasture, into open plantation, best to keep out of dense trees until close to trig, if going that way. First of the day: came across on 1st ferry of the day, for a 2 day weather window.

Getting to the top of Cnocan Garbad was the easy part; the last 35m through the dense spruce plantation to the pillar was the problem. Eventually found the pillar after conducting a box search by compass practically crawling under the lowest branches. Pillar is in good condition despite being encrusted in moss and both the flush bracket and brass spider are still inplace. It would take a dedicated vandal to find this one.
