KF Frustrated that due to my currently useless left knee I couldn't make the final clamber (I might have had a chance if the footholds were the other way round) so only F actually climbed up to the trig itself, discovered with surprise to be ridiculously perched on top of a large boulder but due to the surrounding trees you need to climb up to get the view. The woodland and summit is criss crossed by boggy trails created largely by mountain bikers, while the woodland hides the trig until the last minute.

An evening revisit to my favourite local whilst on a quick walk around Norwood. I parked at the large hardstanding off the B6451 near Top Lane, and just about managed to find the right combination of tracks straight to the pillar. Unfortunately, the plantation has recently been completely taken over by mountain bikers, and there are now dozens of trails crisscrossing all over the place. The trees around the rock the trig stands on have also put on some real growth, so you can't see the pillar now until quite close. The short scramble is still a teasing little challenge - I think my spreading middle-age waistline is tempering my agility. The pillar is still magnificent, though - in great condition, in an amazing location with stunning views. As good as it gets.

One of the very best trigs in the whole area, if not county. The pillar sits atop its very own little gritstone outcrop, and commands a superb position across Washburndale. It isn't a simple task, however, to scramble up this in wet or icy weather, as it is a significant drop if you make a mistake. It's nothing technical at all, but the foothold requires confidence. After a couple of aborted winter attempts to get to this one, I went on a dry day and had no problem with the short scramble. Superb trig in great condition in a wonderful setting. Local perfection!

Spectacular location. Accessible and visible (even more so now that some of the forest has been felled). I used the footpath and tracks from Norwood Edge which virtually lead you directly to the trig. Coming back I used a cycle track which cuts the corner. Pillar stands proud on top of a rock which needs climbing skills which I do not possess. However, I was within inches of touching! Excellent views all round. Pillar looks to be in very good condition with all four holes open

Unfortunately I was there at dusk and my photos don't do it justice but I'm sure subsequent visitor's will. Its a brilliant trig built on the big rock and somebody has provided a little ladder to get you started.

Wonderfully positioned. Couldnt tig the actual trig as I was on me todd and the legs werent long enough to reach the first foot hold and be able to have enough ummph to get the momentum going to climb (needed a shove up the a*$e). I doubt theres a view from the top as its surrounded by forrestation but a good rating for style! REVISITED 09/03/2008 and the change in the 2 years has been tremendous. The woodland around the trig has been zapped, it looks like something Saruman might have done to bits of Fangorn forest and the trig is very prominant now. You now get a good view to Menwith Hill & Armscliffe Crag, although west is still blocked by the trees. The ladder John mentions was not in evidence today. The path I used on both occassions - from the north, down from Little Armsclife, that was a small but dicsernable path approx 18 inches wide has now been utilised by the mountain bike brigade and is an absolute messy mush in places and 4 foot wide at times. Well done lads, yet another triumph for the two wheeled idiots - just what is it about the word FOOTPATH that these morons dont understand!!!!!!!!
