Sporting an old and dirty coat of white paint, it is showing signs of severe weathering: top edges badly chipped; 2 spider arms with exposed ends; substantial fracturing to the left, right and front faces at FB level; various chunks of concrete and screed gouged from all faces. It's one redeeming feature is an inscribed s/steel top cap to commemorate a 50th ascent of the mountain. Cloud down, no views today.

As we approached the car park down Glen Trool she looked up at The Merrick and asked "Are going up that?" "Yes" I replied. "What, all the way to the top!?" She did fine, and said she enjoyed the experience...but hasn't done another Corbett since. Low cloud scuppered my promise of spectacular views. The TP is certainly not in good condition, but comparatively I'd say it's still only 'slightly damaged' rather than 'Damaged'...

On a backpack through Galloway. Very pleasant ascent before tackling the rougher stuff further east.

Afternoon walk from Glen Trool. A fine sunny day. Previous visit some years earlier was in thick hill cloud.

I'm guessing date, but used to go on family holidays to the farm at the bottom from 1973, as I was only 6 then I guess it would have been 78 when I first climbed it. Drop down to east to loch enoch, with an island with another tiny loch in it. Swim to island and go into small loch (its about a foot deep) - then your in a select group I can tell you.
