Revisit. HISTORY: This pillar was erected as a monument marking the site of the birthplace of Major General William Roy, the founder of the Ordnance Survey. Column completed 10th April 1956 costing £57.6s.4d. Computed for triangulation later in 1956 as fourth order station NS77/T447 in the Glasgow block. Last routinely maintained by the OS in October 1958. Relevelled for height to Class 1 precision, tertiary standards in 1963. Informal maintenance of this pillar continues to the present day given its monumental status. SITE VISIT: Approached from east. Parking by south side of lane to east of pillar. Open access to trig pillar in well presented surroundings. Column recently repainted and in excellent condition at date of visit. Spider centre filled with coarse substance. Flush bracket faces south, compass measurement 180°. Vented through west and north sight holes. This is probably the smartest trig pillar anywhere. No views due to local shrubbery.
