Parked on lane beside Shipton Hill Farm about quarter of a mile north east of Shipton Gorge. Onto wooded footpath on east side of lane, bit twisty around fallen trees and mud patches, gentle climb until reaching open ground but densely grown with ferns. Hill was ahead to east but no obvious route. Path became difficult to track, followed flattened ferns for about twenty metres towards hill then just continued through the thick of them and up the hillside. Needed a machete. As ground levelled out was still in dense vegetation and lots of brambles too. Managed to get onto a cleared path but didn’t hold much hope of finding the pillar given the density of ferns. Continued east for about seventy five metres, it was raining by now and was getting soaked. Then thankfully came upon the pillar. Quite a relief, worth extra points. Spider and cap in place. Etched FB, no surprise. No views at the time as weather had closed in. Slightly easier route back down although still densely overgrown.

They say that those who hold the high ground hold the advantage. The path comes out on to multiple ditches and banks. A fantastic achievement without a JCB. This place has quite an atmosphere one can let ones imagination run riot. Look out for the very obvious strip lynchets on the oppersite hill. Oh and by the way someones put a small concete pillar right at the highest point. Shipton Gorge is named after the De Gorge family not a piece of geology.
