Good roadside parking at NX 9122 8856. Track leads off SW then swings round due N to a wall (NX 9109 8888). Over the wall and follow it ESE, first on it's N side, then it's S side. Slightly tricky wall to cross at junction, then easy pasture and gate to top. Pillar sits on a small grassy outcrop, an original centre cap retained, deeply indented lettering; front sight hole open, both LHD and RHD plugs are starting to deteriorate. Good views.

Fields to east are not owned by Lower Sheild Hall Farm. Owner of house to south of farm kindly allowed me to park outside her property , even moving her car to fit me in! Farmer equally helpful and friendly and sure he would have let me park in his large yard - due east of trig.

Up steep bank from east. No distant views due to low cloud, some turbines visible above forest to east.

Approached from southeast. Good roadside parking by west side of unclassified road at NX912885 opposite entrance to Clauchrie. Followed forest track network to its northern end at NX911888, and out onto open grazing slope. Aiming high, headed NW to junction of field boundaries at NX910890, and over into mapped trig field. Hill top used for grazing. Pillar in good condition. Spider retains original OS centre cap with deep indented letters. Flush bracket faces WNW, compass measurement 251°. Vented through sight hole on FB face. Open outlook to surrounding hills and down Nithdale towards Dumfries.
