Drove along the road to the north of the Castle a couple of times looking for a place to pull over, pulled in to entrance to farm (?) buildings on north side of road to north of the hill about half a mile west of the B4192 (Old A419). Over high metal gate and uphill across grass field aiming for high ground. As ground levelled reached a barbed wire fence running east west. Wondered if I would need to climb over it but saw an opening in the fence about a hundred metres west. To south west could make out pillar on the side of the castle ramparts, whitewashed and inside a fenced enclosure. To get to pillar, headed down a defensive ditch and up the other side. Looks well maintained with a toposcope next to it, useful for pointing out locations and their directions. Cap plugged, spider slightly offset from centre. Good views all around.

Trig on a plinth next to a topograph on a rock, all surrounded by a rather creaky platform. This must be one of Wiltshire's best kept secrets due to the complete lack of parking anywhere near it! A mile up a (fortunately not especially steep) hill will get you there if you can find a place to park beside a busy main road. Very pretty surrounding meadows in spring time, and a bunker and memorial copse are both nearby. Hill also popular with paragliders... but no-one else! Place was almost deserted. Spectacular views in all directions reward paragliders and trigpointers alike.

We parked on the raised grass verge where the Ridgeway (not the road called "Ridge Way") met the B4192. Walked up the Ridgeway, then spent ages searching around the wrong hill. We were around the copse with the concrete bunker and the trees with lots of memorials, flowers and cards for people who have died. Tip for future visitors: it's NOT here! We eventually realised our mistake and carried on walking up the Ridgeway until we came to the sign that said "permissive footpath to Liddington Castle" or something to that effect. Followed the path, effectively walking around the field of crops, until we finally came to the trig point on top of the hill fort. Trig point was in good condition with white wash, asphalt centre plug. Amazing views from here and the only trig point that I've come across with its own timber decking! Had to rush down the hill so sadly we didn't get a chance to stop and take in the views.

The pillar stands on the ramparts of an ancient hillfort on the edge of the downs to the south-east of Swindon. It stands on a substantial plinth and is surrounded by decking. It has FB S1268 and the centre of the spider has an asphalt plug. The trig was visited as part of a circular walk through sweeping downland with broad, wide dry valleys from the lay by next to the milestone to the south-east of Liddington Warren Farm. A permissive footpath allows access from the Ridgeway to the castle. A circuit of the ramparts affords fine views in all directions. It looks over Swindon to the north-west and a wide expanse of lower flattish land continues into the hazy distance. Barbury Castle is on a downland spur to the west and the flat topped wooded hill near Lyneham was recognised in the distance. The large green fields of the interior of the Lambourn Downs are to the south with parts of Milk Hill on the horizon. The rolling green ridges at the edge of the downs stretch into the distance to the north-east. I was often accompanied by the twittering of skylarks on my walk. Several deer were seen bounding across fields in Shipley Bottom. A couple of paragliders and a buzzard were utilising the air currents on the steep slope to the north of the trig. A rivet bench mark was found on top of the milestone in the lay by and another on a boulder next to the track through Shipley Bottom. There is a cut bench mark on a wooden gatepost where the footpath joins the byway in Shipley Bottom and another on a wooden fence post on a side track off of the Ridgeway going up towards the castle.

A very well preserved and protected trig. A permissive path runs approx 550m from the public ROW. Good views over Swindon, this being the unitary top of Swindon, or something like that. Views also south and west over the Marlborough Downs to the Wilts county top at Milk Hill/Tan Hill. Milk is the official top but they are both given as 294m on the OS maps, Milk probably pips Tan by a few inches, oops, sorry centimetres. ***Revisited 30 Jan 2014. Pillar's had a fresh coat of white paint since my last visit 6 years ago. Cloud down today so no views. Cap missing, asphalt plug; all sight holes open.

My favourite local hill and Iron Age fort which I've visited many times though this was my first formal trig log. This, and White Horse Hill (Uffington, my second favourite local hill :-), formed the Ridge Way baseline from which all other Retriangulation measurements were taken. This eventually joined up with measurements taken from the Lossiemouth baseline to form the north/south backbone of the Retriagulation. This explains the low FB number. And it's still used today as a passive GPS station :-) And great views over Swindon as well.
