If you ain't already 'bagged' it, an easy find thanx to Stew B...Park on Jubilee Road at GR 019 258 & taking a right & crossing the road 'make' for the 'Eddie Stobart kiosk' to locate the green metal fencing left of the kiosk. Take a total of 45 strides from the fencing, across the road to the kiosk & from the kiosk across the road beyond it. Look out for a two foot length metal bar purposefully placed by Stew B along the kerbing on the grass side & 'go-in' under the tree there. I got real low to 'duck-under' the fallen tree rather than trying to climb over it, not quite, but not far off a crawl. Getting in under the tree wasn't too difficult & once under it, there's a fair bit of room at the back of it to move around, though not quite enough for a 12 foot snooker table! To be honest now you know where to make your entrance, you could omit the Jubilee Road park & park right in front of the metal bar. I doubt the bar will move, being heavy & having a piece protruding from one side I stuck into the grass...Real interesting to know that the trig was slate-clad on all sides, had a silver finale on top & bore a plaque referencing its inauguration in 1970 by Harold Wilson. Described as a benchmark rather than a trig, there being a finale atop of the thing I very much doubt it ever had a 'spider' at all. A rather splendid 'piece' of history I think 'making' its finding all the more worthwhile. Hope my 'blog' inspires YOU to go search it out. I absolutely love these sort'a trigs, hidden, harder to find & so satusfying when you have!

Parked up in the entrance to the old bus works / Stobart depot. No one around so walked tot he approx. area of the trig, looked around and deduced it must be in the trees somewhere. A toppled tree made it difficult to see, and even a bit tricky to get to. It was still as last reported but I rolled it over to see if the FB was on the underside, alas not. Was going to roll it back, but thought I'd leave just to give the poor thing a change of outlook. It's a pretty miserable location, but the fact that one of the iconic sights of my youth emanated from there granted it an extra interest point. No height is given, but I make it to be around 130m.

Odd looking pillar with slate slab cladding the 4 sides and top - one slab missing and the top slab loose. Located to RHS of the entrance to what is now an Eddie Stobart truck yard, tucked away in the mature shrubbery but easily accessible. Inscription names it as a 'Bench Mark' set up by Prime Minister Harold Wilson on 20 Feb 1970. So he didn't just dedicate it, he set it up. An excellent example of manual labour! Drove in and parked with the wagons, a few drivers around, no-one seemed interested in me. ***Re-visited 13 Jan 2019.
