Started at Balafark. Lots of trees have been felled but good tracks till you have to head west at a bend. Scramble up the dirt and follow the new trees along a ditch. Terrain quite difficult with lots of logs and branches.

Can park by road at Balafark (56.09,-4.23) then an easy walk on track not yet on maps to 56.0874,-4.2594, then an easy ride to follow west - you can’t see it from the track at that point, you have to scramble up a muddy slope. There are a few red deer in the enclosure. And ticks…

Parking to south at entrance to marked track. Had to detour through fields due to cattle - had trig bagging collie with me. Followed track to end, no sign of any visitors - easy place to get lost, fall and have a very long wait for help. From track end go 50 yards straight ahead then 45° left through gap in trees. Past bird table in middle of bog then left at fallen big shooting seat thing. Up wide ride (narrow one blocked by fallen trees), then quick jook left then right and you're there. The map indicates a considerable distance between the track end and the forest rides - the actual distance is much less - be careful. Explorer 348 is much more realistic than the Street map on this site. Wear waterproof boots or wellies and in summer be prepared for millions of flies. First visit for 5 years.

Second visit. For photographs and GPS reading. Trees have grown since my last visit. Pillar in good condition. Spider centre plugged with tar. Flush bracket faces SSE ~155°. Vented through sighting hole on FB face. No view, completely lost to surrounding forestry.

Had just parked car at end of track when pick-up of shootists arrived to 'work' in woods. Leader came and spoke to me, he is in charge of managing of woods ranging from Loch Lomond to Castlecary. Was very civil, did not try and stop me but emphasised I MUST not leave open firebreak areas, must not venture into trees.

Good condition pillar with south-east-ish facing FB and SE/NE sightholes open and clear. Bolt visible. Parked at the entrance to the marked path running up into the forest then via the firebreaks up to the trig. Bizarre deliverance-style hide nearby, probably to shoot trigpointers using the pillar as bait. The pillar itself stands in a big clearing. Absolutely no views at all, but probably would be pretty good if the trees weren't there!

Came up from forestry track half a mile east of Harvieston. When this ends, go N a short distance then W on narrow firebreak. Easier to find than expected.

Don’t be fooled into try to find this trig from the clearing at highest point of hill. Took us 20 minutes to fight our way through the trees. Walk on another 2 to 3 minutes down hill until you reach a 2 metre cutting in the trees, follow this then you will reach a further wider brake in the trees, this leads to a big clearing and the pillar. Only took us 5 minutes to return to the edge of the forest this way.
