From National Trust car park at north end of Barrow Flats, first section is up a flight of steps onto the top of the Down. Already fantastic views open out to north towards Weston-Super-Mare and south across the huge expanse of Barrow Flats at low tide. Headed west, over first rise and pillar comes into view on top of the next hill another kilometre to the west. Good to see it and know where to head. Pleasant walk. Quite blustery. A few walkers about. Luckily as I reached the pillar the various groups of people ahead had moved on and nobody was close behind so I had a few moments to get unhindered photographs. FB number slightly damaged unless it has always looked like that. Raised S prefix. Cap plugged. Great views in all directions, including towards Steep Holm Island where a TP is shown on my OS map but getting there would require a boat trip and probably having to spend a whole day there because of the tidal cycle. Maybe one day. Afterwards tea and cake stop at the NT tea room. Very good.

Easily the most enjoyable of the seven trigs I bagged today, Brean Down has a generously sized car park with an easy to use cash payment machine (£6, though), and a couple of shops and facilities before the whacking great cliffside staircase that I was very grateful for! Once at the top, the views are stunning in every direction, and the walk to the trig point is lengthy but enjoyable (and very popular). The trig itself is in good condition, and looks out across the sea and the shore for miles around. It was an impressive sight on a grey day like today; on a clear sunny day is would surely be spectacular. A must-visit.

So… Day three of my expedition started here... Brean Down... and I can’t think of a better place to start. After climbing all the steps (no, I didn’t count them but there were lots!) from the car park to the top, the landscape opened out onto a rolling, green vista. An easy stroll along to the trig pillar on the highest point, shared only with a small herd of goats. These were REAL goats... long hair, long horns, beards, the lot! They would probably have been more at home in the Alps or the Rockies. However, I digress... the pillar is in good condition apart from the missing centre plug that has been replaced with a bitumen/tarmac filler. The views are excellent, with Steep Holm and the Welsh coast 10 miles away to the north west and back towards Weston-Super-Mare in the north east. Having done the biz here, I carried on to the old fort on the end of the peninsular. Interesting point, here. During WW II , they installed two, 6 inch, naval guns from an old WW I battleship. Now these guns had a range of 20 miles, apparently. Had they ever fired in anger... which they didn’t... and missed the enemy ship they were aiming at... the good folk in Caerphilly would have been really pissed off. I guess the warlords of the time figured a few irate Welsh peasants didn’t actually count for very much in the great scheme of things.

The pillar has an asphalt plug and FB BsM 3270. Brean Down is a limestone promontory south of Weston, it has a rich and interesting history; pre-roman to the Second World War. The site has been designated a SSSI for both its geology and its flora. Accompanied by my granddaughter; today was clear and sunny with a huge view: Weston, Mendips, Somerset Levels and Glastonbury Tor; the beach stretching down to Burnham; the West Somerset coast and across the Bristol Channel to Wales.

I'm estimating the time that I first went to this trig point, but it is on a very special promontory, which I have visited many a time... as someone else mentions, it is well worth visiting the ruined fort at the end, which had been partially rebuilt the last time I visited, in about 2003.
