After visiting Middle Hope, stopped in Weston Super Mare for a cup of tea. Then continued south west, M5 then through Bridgwater and west along the A39. Parked in Cannington. Could have parked much closer but the new bypass is not on my 1974 OS sheet 182. From Cannington, uphill to north, left, west at crossroads signed as a dead end but a footpath and cycle path goes downhill and west across the new road. Then west onto lane opposite, past retreat centre. As road bends to north west, hill comes into view to north west. From the corner of the road is a stile over the wall by the gate. About two hundred metres across open field. Uphill onto ancient hill fort. Into the trees where the hill becomes quite steep is very rocky. Were these all ancient walls which have fallen down the hillside. At the top pillar comes into view on north east side of the hill fort. The weather had cleared by now and Glastonbury Tor was visible to the east, worth extra point. Good views to north and east. Views south and west obscured by vegetation. Spider and cap in place, raised S prefix.

Parked in the Weighbridge Car Park and took the same route as Penfold in 2011. How I managed to avoid any more than 2 stings on my bare legs from the abundant nettles is a mystery. The top is a fairly wild place (except for the quarry noise) and gives great views as previously described. On returning to the car there was a polite note under my wipers for not checking in to the office. I went and apologised, got a friendly reception and briefed the chap on duty about the trig point and promised to include this advice on the website. So book in and you'll have no probs, but autumn or winter might be a better time of year!

Circular walk out from Bridgwater via Cannington then back via River Parrett riverside path from Combwich. Approached trig from the path to the east up through woods. Excellent view from top. Did notice a recent planning application sign to increase the quarry size in the area so the trig point day may be numbered. One thing in its favour is that the hill is an ancient hill fort.

Parked up by the quarry entrance and strolled up through the kissing gate directly towards the run down stone wall, crossing it by an especially broken part by a tree. Continuing to climb up the next field looking for a wide track up to the right. Take this passing a small enclosure then head up left over to the rocks up to the summit. The pillar is in good nick, cracking views north up the Parrett estuary. Super sting nettle rash to lower limbs.

The pillar stands in the grass and nettle interior of a small hill fort; it has a metal cap with small raised lettering and has FB S//3252. The footpath was taken from the quarry gate to the east as far as a convenient break in the boundary wall of the woods to allow me a direct route to the summit. The site looks over the Parrett estuary to Brean Down and Brent Knoll; rain clouds were over the Mendips; Glastonbury Tor could be seen in the distance to the east. The view to distant hills in the southeast and of the Quantocks to the south and west is largely blocked by nearby trees. There was a constant din from the machinery in the nearby quarry. The hill is reputedly the sight of a battle between Saxons and Vikings in 878.
