Great views all around. Visited whilst also circumnavigating 5 lakes on a 9 mile run. Have probably visited this trig before, as I bagged the summit on 16/06/2017

Well-defined and shapely little hill nestling among many higher but rather featureless hills between Weardale and Teesdale, at this time of year the whole hill is bright purple with heather, the overpoweringly sweet smell of the heather as we walked up from the B6278 was almost intoxicating.

Parked at Bollihope. 1st of 2 trigs today. Followed a fig of 8 route incorporating Five Pikes. The hot sunny weather facilitated ample time to stop, stare and explore. Chunks of quartz visible underfoot when walking through the heather. Smashing views especially to the west and south.

Pillar has minor chips on a top edge - open spider. Nice hill (a Tump) - little quartzite crag not far from most westerly cairn. Good views!

SITE VISIT: Approached from WNW. Parking on hardstanding verge west side of B6278 at NY984366. Direct route keeping to high ground as indicated by contours. Heather clad moor. Pillar in good condition. Spider centre open. Flush bracket faces 231° SW. Vented through NW sight hole. 360° open outlook.

Initially a faint track from the road then plod through heather. Plug missing; one sighting hole open; minor graffiti on spider. Good views over Stanhope.

no plug...stunning views of Weardale and Bollihope Common...wonderful place to spend a late summer afternoon. For those interested in the Geology/mineralogy of Weardale west of the trig towards the cairn and just to the south is a fantastic example of a mineral vein outcropping at the surface (Slitt Vein).
