Walked up past the cross (a 'T' actually, but locals call it a cross for some reason). Pillar sits at edge of heather moorland. Original top cap is retained, raised lettering; rear and RHS sight holes open. 360deg panorama.

What a lovely surprise - been past so many times without even seeing the trig peeping into sight as you head from Strines over the top and towards Derbyshire. Excellent ramble - not a logical route but a gem of an area, towards Rowarth then a figure 8 back to the top (joint with the Picking Rods) of Stockport UA. Kinder looking beautifully wild with the long turbined hills of the north west one side and the beautiful Derbyshire synclines to the south.

On the way to finishing off bagging the last few trigs on OS Map OL 1, Dark Peak, and what a surprise this one has been. Out walking with my mates, Tracker Dog, Rubber Ball and Mick, starting from New Mills then W along the ridge to get to the trig, and the views just got better and better, of Manchester, the Cheshire Plain and Pennines. Magic. So much so we relaxed for a tea break to soak up the view of the W edge of Kinder. Some weather monitoring equipment was there as well as the stones laid in a strange oval shape as mentioned by 'gushoneybun' (love the name) in a previous log. Down to Marple and a stroll down the Peak Forest Canal to New Mills. A great day.

The recent unseasonal heavy snow affecting Northern England cut short my plans to visit a few more pillars in the area so this one was my lot for the day. I locked my bicycle at the corner of Gibb Lane and then proceeded uphill on foot. I turned left onto Black Lane (Track), where the vicious sub zero easterly wind soon had me blinded with spindrift. In one place there was a five foot snow bank off to the side. This time last year it was shorts and t-shirt weather up in the Highlands! I climbed the gate into the next field and then stepped over the electric(?) fence to access the trig. Unsurprisingly, I didn't hang around the pillar for any length of time, before scurrying off down to Stockport train station, where a bleak, two hour long journey back home awaited.
