Along road heading south east from Princetown. After about two miles, small car park on west side of road. Higher ground to west but no obvious path and pillar not visible. Appeared to be two people in the distance walking west across the moor, so thought there was probably some sort of path. Not really, as it turned out. From car park, headed west and joined an obvious path running north south. Headed north to gain height. A few marker stones alongside the path engraved with PCWW 1917. Asking at the National Park visitor centre later on, they told me these are boundary posts for the Plymouth Corporation Water Works. From a post near a wall, turned west. Mostly a trudge over tussocks, long grass, wet and boggy in places. Continuing west, ground rises, suddenly saw a line of figures walking south in file. Looked very odd at first, it was troops carrying large rucksacks and weapons. Against the skyline looked like camels or something. Pillar came into view to west. There were more groups of troops standing around near the pillar. Slightly unnerving but also a bit thrilling. They didn’t take much notice of me. I said hello to one who glanced over, looked like the one in charge. Pillar standing in the middle of a moat of green weed covered water. Stepped into water to get picture of FB, mud was quite deep, a bit of a wobble getting feet out. Would have given the soldiers a laugh if I’d lost my balance. Raised S prefix. Cap missing. Avoided photographs of troops.

Trig some approx 1 km east of Cramber Tor "in the middle of nowhere" as often the case on Dartmoor, but serves as an excellent guide whilst walking in the area. In good condition - and no water or even mud around the trig! Have walked past it many times over the years and was convinced I had already logged it - but still took the photo today, to discover I had been mistaken! Glorious weather for my 8 mile walk from Black Tor, up the aquaduct and around Raddick Hill.

It was still wet on top though and our visit was marred by a wasp nest either in or nearby the pillar.
