About a mile and a half north east of Otterhampton on narrow road signposted for Steart. At a bend in the road there’s a small car park. This looked like the right spot from the map but no sign of pillar. Stood on ridge of ground to north of car park scanning across the flat ground. Looked at the notice board, but no details about the pillar. There was a big clump of dense brambles a few metres west of the car park. Didn’t fancy scrambling around in there. Walked along the wall for about fifty metres then in astonishment noticed I was almost standing on top of the pillar. Spider and cap level with the top of the wall. Only the north side of the pillar is not completely buried. Used a nearby stick to dig down as far as I could trying to judge if the FB was on that side. No luck. Either I didn’t dig down far enough or the FB is now totally covered. Slightly chipped on one top corner. Would need a JCB to get to the other faces. Bit aggravating. OS plaque is in place. Quite a pleasant spot. Good views across the Bristol Channel and towards Hinkley Point. Reading other logs, a previous visitor has dug out the ground on the north side. Same conclusion.

The pillar sits between the gabions of the flood defences near the shore of Bridgwater Bay. The top 2 feet of the pillar are all that can be seen. It has a metal cap with shallow lettering and an OS GPS plate; if the FB is intact it is now below ground level. The top edges are weathered, the corners are rounded and a small chunk is missing from the northwest corner; there is a rivet near the southwest corner. A track runs alongside the defences from a corner of Stert Drove a small distance to the east. The site is surrounded by low lying pasture and salt marsh. The shoreline embankment is a short distance to the north; further on Steep Holm and Wales can be seen across the Bristol Channel. Brean Down, Burnham-on-Sea and Brent Knoll can be seen to the northeast. The Mendips are on the horizon to the east, the Quantocks to the southwest and Hinckley Point Power Stations to the west. The site is within the Bridgwater Bay SSSI and National Nature Reserve.
