Slight damage to top of one corner and crack around 3 sides looks like it may have been filled or just painted over but should keep the rain and freeze thaw out, well done to the fixer! Walked up here from Taff's Well, then on to Craig yr Allt - both Marilyns. This is also a county top - of Cardiff UA. A stiff climb up from the valley floor, interesting winding through streets, over railway tracks (used and disused), rivers and dual cariageways, finally out onto the open grassland. The views are spectacular, south across the Bristol Channel to north Devon and Somerset - Steep and Flat Holm both clearly visible. Cardiff is laid out for all to see. Today was a stunningly clear day with blue skies - a lovely change from all the clag we've recently been having. Located on the top of a round barrow burial mound, one of 4 in the immediate area, the pillar is in a sorry state, with a severe crack running at FB level on 3 sides; cap has been replaced with tarmac plug; spider was defaced on 25 May 2008 by one Brian Davies (or a groupie of his); and there is a chunk missing from one of the top corners. I have demoted the pillar to 'damaged', will the adminers agree?

Good all round views - in the attached image of the pillar, the view is looking north-west, with Beddau and Llantwit Fadre behind and the Ely Valley stretching into the distance. The main damage (see images) is a crack right across the pillar, seemingly on a construction joint between two concrete pours. It would not take a great effort to push the top off!

Its was a bit of a climb for an old fart like me but it was well worth it. The scenery was stunning - The Brecon Beacons on one side and Cardiff bay on the other. GREAT

The hill that that Hugh Grant film was about - they filmed it on Gyrn Moelfre - but local legend has it that the tump was raised to get the hill over 1000' and as Monmouthshire was then officially England, that made it the first "mountain" in Wales. Utter tosh as the tump is Bronze age and a mountyain in Wales is an area of moorland/rough grazing and can be any height. On a marilyn bagging raid.. Some one else was on a car bagging raid and I caught them trying to break in to mine. £200 worth of damage - Heddlu De Cymru were not interested. Take care in South Wales. Oh - Cardiff Council Top as well.
