For reasons that I can't recall I decided to approach this pillar from the private track to the east of Bernard's Wood (which has been chopped). The gate was open so we simply walked a quarter of a mile up the track to the old Gun Club Clubhouse then followed a reasonably well walked path another quarter of a mile NW, past the quarry, to the pillar. Great views of Blencathra and the Northern Fells to the SW and across to the Northern Pennines in the other direction. We got a bit lucky as the gate to the lane was open and as we approached the old Gun Club there was a lady getting into her car, she told us it was private land so we played dumb saying we though tit was part of Greystoke Forest. She didn't mind us going to the TP just this once, but reiterated that it was Private Land. When we returned to the car we found the gate locked, but no problem to just hop over it.

After about 150 yards it opens out on to open heath. There's a lot of felling to the left, but the highest point is clear. But there is no sign of any TP. This was my fourth attempt at this one, the permissive footpaths and the car park mentioned in Greystokes Forest are now all closed and the gates and fences have all been raised in height with extra barbed wire on top. We parked in Greystoke village and walked a permissive path through the estate which is designed to link through to the area of open access land to the northwest of the castle. This path takes you towards the boundary of old quarry site and a little off-roading to the trig point. Its a bit of a walk but very pleasant scenery. Information about the open access area can be found on the internet.

Continuing our round of trigs from Greystoke, this one is a little more involved. The forest was closed to access due to 'major works', but after we slipped over the defences, we found it completely abandoned of men and machinery. The quarry itself was deserted. A bit of tricky bushwhacking followed a dash up the track in the rain and the pillar presented itself. It actually has a nice spot, with good views. The pillar is leaching salts, has several cracks and heavy lichen growth but is otherwise fine. A good trig to bag, this.
