Parked on the lane at the north end of Clowbridge Resr and headed up the road towards the Met Office masts etc. The "golf ball" in front of the pillar is used to "estimate precipitation intensity". I suppose it's more scientific than sending the dog out to see how wet it is..There is a warning sign as you approach the "golf ball" of hazards involved with trespassing, including death and non ionising radiation. You have been warned! I have since found out that Hameldon Hill is the site of an Scheduled Monument, specifically a WW2 bombing decoy complex 390m north of Heights Farm. I'll have to go back sometime to have a look.

Third log of the day, have headed over from Thieveley Pike. Trig behind the weather station ( had to scale the barbed fence). Another original plug in this one. Lovely day now, if a little breezy. Great view of the back of Pendle Hill.

Passing wintry showers with a nice deluge just as we were at the far point of the walk. On the plus side this fine adorned hill often driven past, then after many years delay to the Singing Ringing tree/Panopticon. In a fine and wonderful voice in the wind and all to ourselves between deluges. Handsome scarred lands.

Up from New Laithe and on return journey from Gt Hameldon. Pillar has all metal work intact and plug with raised lettering. Mounted on a substantial concrete plinth. Good views on a really hot day (close on 30c ) Maintenance going on at the meteorological weather radar - not that its had much to do over the last two months ! other than measure this glorious summer temperature...

Parked at road end leading to weather station. Easy walk up path at side of road. Windy on top. Nice views. There was an old burntout renault clio 1.5dci at the top of road leading to the weather station. Used to own one of these.

Logged as part of a 3 trig walk starting from the Hapton inn, up Hambledon Hill to the common then onto greater Hambledon and down to peel park in Accrington. Bit tricky to get to, had a but of fence hopping to do.

HISTORY: Pillar built in May 1948 costing £16.19s.6d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station SE02/T16 during 1948. Levelled for height in 1961. Last maintained by the OS in October 1979. SITE VISIT: Overall approach from ESE. Parked to north side off yellow road at SD814285. Followed RoW to due south of trig then boundary wall to top. Pillar stands to NW side of fenceline. Column in good condition. Spider has replacement OS cap with raised small narrow letters. Flush bracket faces NNW, ~331°. Three sight holes open, SW face still plugged, innards block with debris. 360° open outlook if you ignore all the comms gear.

I parked just off main road in Dunnockshaw to make a longer walk of it. I took a higher moorland route on the way up and the weather station road on the way back.

Drove the lane to the locked gate. A helicopter was defending the trig, but I bagged it anyway, distracting it with constant withering fire, then sneaking round the weather station. (I hadn't enough stamina to go on to Great Hameldon. And it struck me that any trigpointing car driver who finds the gate unlocked, drives to the weather station, bags the trig, then sets off for Great Hameldon, risks the gate being padlocked when he gets back. Don't do it!!!)

I've cycled up access roads to comms masts several times for trigs, and this one didn't disappoint. Locked gate at end of road and start of access track, but a wide gap to the right let me cycle by. Engaged third chainring and up, up, up. Views right out to Clwydian Hills.

Walked up the access road from Clow Bridge Reservoir, then north up the track to the east of the wall and stepped across the wire. There is a lot of very new fencing up here - I wandered over to the northern mast to see if access was possible from there. There are no gates or stiles into the access land from here.

I approached from Clow Bridge to the east up a good track. Great views but there is a selection of radio masts. Trig stands proud on a good concrete base.

Approached from Great Hameldon via boggy moorland paths. The easiest way to this trig is to drive to New Laithe Farm SD814285 wherethere is just enough parking for two cars then up the private road to the weather station. Step over the fence behind the weather station directly onto the concrete trig base without getting muddy feet.

Good views north - pity about all paraphanalia to the south of the trig. This is one of the rainfall radar locations, providing data for the met office.
