Ran into the plantation along the public bridleway from the north west - no climbing over locked gates needed from this side. It's just off the track, hidden in the trees. Go past the wireless station then turn right at the fence to find the trig.

There is easy access to this Trig from the small car park on the main Whitby to Guisborough road. The access is however over private ground and requires a climb over a wire fence to gain access to the trig.

Large mapped dirt parking area to SE, on opp side of road. Mapped track initially, then across easy heather, and over post/wire fencing into woodland. Pillar retains an original centre cap, lightly indented lettering. RHD side sight hole open, other 3 sealed. Only a few metres into the trres, but no views.

Over the road from the car park and over the gate, along the track and over the next gate once the trees are reached, then turned back on self and down the fence line to the pillar, BWF avoided - it's not as bad a Trig as it's been described below! Late afternoon sunlight and the autumnal colours of the trees made this a better experience than previous reports had led us to expect.

Not a great trig. Carpark handy, busy road to cross and "keep out" signs to navigate. Trig is very clear behind a new barbed wire fence. Decided that close approach unnecessary and bagged this on from 10 metres away.

Being later in the day I figured the 'no entry without permission' sign opposite the car park could be taken casually, especially after already dicing with death crossing the road. I woke up today appless so it was a bit of a rummage. Confronted by two horses then a 'shooting in progress' sign set my nerves off, couple of back and fores, and there it was as clear as day!

Disappointingly fenced off inside a plantation now. Starting to look overgrown - visitors are discouraged from going near it. Path from main road into forest was hard to find - gates padlocked and keep out controlled grazing meant few if any would come across this trig in the deep, dark forest!

From the car park, over padlocked gate at second open gate turned left along new? line of fence posts. Climbed over as pillar is only just the other side. The last of seven on a wet Sunday. The seventh was Hinderwell Beacon which I had visited 12 years ago so not logged today. Rams had not bagged this one so one for him.

Parked opposite the gated lane. Climbed over a very heavy (and heavily padlocked) gate and quickly trotted up the rough track. As per previous logs, went to second gate and turned left up through treeline to avoid barbed wire fence. Pillar sits a few metres inside the trees and is in fine condition.

Hadn't done my homework on this one properly, so didn't realise the pillar was in the woods.Aimed for the mast (lower ground) and then up through the woods to higher ground. With several upright boulders amongst the trees I actually walked past the pillar. Now I can say it's 80 yds west of the 2nd new gate and 10yds into the wood.

Parked in free car park opposite mast,walked up the track,not sure if its a prow but did see some hoofprints on the floor,the gate was padlocked at the bottom but a path goes around the gate.made a beeline across the scrubland when east of the pillar towards the wood.the pillar is a few feet away from the rock,nice and easy to spot,a bit of moss on the pillar but in good condition.

Easy parking and sneakily hidden away in edge of wood so no view from pillar itself which is intact though gradually camouflaging itself. View back to Whitby from nearby mound on other side of track is pretty good with the abbey visible.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 28th November 1947 costing £5.2s.0d. Computed as secondary triangulation station NZ42/47 in 1948. Levelled for height in 1960, this triangulation pillar was used during the Third geodetic levelling, England & Wales. It was included on the Flamborough to Mickleby levelling line. Last maintained by the OS in June 1981. SITE VISIT: Approached from southeast. Free public car park off SE side of A171 at NZ843087. Followed mapped track until due east of trig then across scrubby ground towards woods. Pillar just inside woods and in good condition. Spider retains original OS centre cap with shallow engraved letters. Flush bracket faces SE, ~127°. Vented through NE sight hole. No view, in woods.

Just outside the wood in line with the "marker" stone and the trig is a modern surface mounted survey marker. Has this been used because there is no line of sight from the trig now the trees have matured.

To update previous hints. Park in opposite car park. Walk up path and around locked gate. Large hole in hedge on left. There is a vehicle sized track cut but this is a short dead end. Follow this then turn right at edge of forest and follow close to the treeline till infamous rock is found. The trig is visible from here just metres into the trees. Nice views on approach (I had a sunny day) and the woods are easy to penetrate. Marked this one as a 6 as approach so delightful and short.

Nice bit of moss on pillar but nothing much else to see. After gap in hedge look for gap in trees and turn left. The big rock wasnt very obvious in the undergrowth.

Located on a walk from Grosmont returning via Egton Bridge. Had some difficulty finding the Trigpoint – I’d gone slightly off my route to find it and my Satmap said I was within yards - after looking in heather and gorse bushes I finally located the trigpoint just inside a plantation of conifers.

Parked in car park across A171 took the path not right of way as gate is locked easy to walk round. At first gap on left in hedges walk along tree line go around brushes which stick out enter woods at big rock trig about 5 meters into woods. good condition no views.

Nicely hidden just inside the forest edge, unlike how it appears on my OS map. Anyway I found it lurking in the shadows.

Spotted this on the map and thought it would be a nice and easy way to finish the day,looked like it was going to be easy next to the track, spent a good 15 minutes without success and ended up phoning the lad for the grid ref, well hidden in the trees but got there in the end.

Well hidden in the trees and gorse. Crossing the A171 from the nearby car park isnt much fun due to fast moving traffic - extreme care is required. No views due to the trees.
