The trig is in stunning condition, and it sits in a wonderful spot. But the walk in to reach it was about as unpleasant as it gets... in fact this one is going on my list of 'never again' along with Yockenthwaite Moor... I parked at Tom Corner carpark on the Dallowgill Road, and made my way through the dreadful Potter Lane Farm. It's typical Nidderdale access - no stiles, no signs, thick vegetation, blocked gates, blocked or non-existent paths... eventually made it out onto the moor, and it was quickly apparent that the ROW on the map doesn't translate to any kind of path or even vague trod on the ground. I had to point myself at the distant trees surrounding the Kettlestang shooting hut on the horizon, and plough on. It's only a mile and a half, but the knee-high heather, burnt scrub, bog... it took forever. I finally made it to the shooting house and then on to the pillar. It's in excellent condition, with lovely smooth concrete and little weathering. An original cap tops off a superb trig. I returned the same way. The pillar is recommended, but the route I took absolutely is not.

Walked up the open access track from the Dallowgill to Pateley Bridge road - quite a hike of at least two miles each way. There was a huge and noisy flock of black-headed gulls away up on the moorside as I walked up. A very isolated trig to say it's not that high above sea level for the Dales - just over 1300 feet. Windy but warm summer's day with great views from the trig down into the Vales of Mowbray and York. Trig in very good condition with original plug and deeply indented lettering - the gamekeepers have even mown some strips through the heather more-or-less up to the trig point, which is only a few hundred yards up the low hill from the shooting box, where I had a rest and admired the views. This well-maintained shooting box even has it's own (locked) external toilet, which is unusual, though perhaps to be expected on what is one of Yorkshire's most prestigious grouse moors.

Walked the long lane up to the shooting house then clambered up through the heather to the top. Good view considering the modest height of the hill - Nidderdale might not be as celebrated as its neighbours, but its hilltops command some uninterrupted views to the east. You can see the cranes and chimneys of Teeside and remind yourself how lucky you are to be miles away from them!

Approached from the NW having come up from Bouthwaite via the track to Kirkby Malzeard. From the track negotiating the moor was a toil of a pleasure. If it wasn't knee-high heather barring progress then it was knee-deep bog instead! I'm sure it must be a lot easier approaching from Kettlestang Shooting House. The immediate environs of the trig point are not particularly inspiring but the views are far-reaching and magnificent - worth 8/10 just for those.
