An isolated & exposed trig point but ain't they simply the best? Half a dozen, perhaps even a dozen 'bags' a day's just boss for upping your personal 'trig pot', but drives here, there & everywhere, with new places to park having to be found & shoes off boots on umpteen times is so demanding...And so, in my personal opinion one isolated & exposed trig point beats hands down a coupl'a handfulls of quick in & outies! Initially drove to park at Studfold Activity Centre but signage suggested it was for patrons only so I re-located to park in Lofthouse GR 10151 73479 a pleasent no-fee car park. Passing thro' Studfold I took the road heading for Low Blayshaw & a direct approach towards the disused quarry & Blayshaw Crags. Continued uphill to 'meet' the track 'running' WE at GR 09793 71385 at which, taking a right 'led' me to the sheepfolds. I then followed the 'road' to the shooting hut, taking a left from it to soon leave the 'road' & proceed across rough, open moorland to the Wig Stones & trig beyond NNW...18675 steps & 8.4 miles!

From Meugher, 5.5km across boggy moorland, at least the weather was reasonable. Pillar sits in a remote area retaining an original centre cap, raised lettering; rear sight hole open. Extensive panoramic heather moorland views. Picked up a good estate road ~300m due N that led most of the way back... not so remote after all!

A foggy, wet late afternoon at the end of November isn't a sensible time to be visiting isolated moorland trigs... If it wasn't for the shooting tracks that lead you to within a few hundred metres of this pillar, it would be awful to visit. I took the same route as Hands, parking up not far from the Studfold Activity Centre, and reaching the access land via the High Blayshaw PROW. Following the fence south to the sheepfold at SE 09573 71321 led quickly to the good shooting track which leads eventually to the shooting hut at SE 09025 69767 and then left and on to where the track terminates in a large hardstanding some 350m north of the pillar. In the thick fog, it was a compass job to locate it. The pillar looks in fine condition despite some vegetation, with a very clean, new-looking spider. No views to speak of due to the weather. I returned the same way, reaching the car just before dark. Along with its even more remote neighbour Meugher, this is a tough slog but worth the effort.

Parked in lay-by on main road and reached access land via Studfold and High Blayshaw PROW. Subzero temps and a thin layer of snow, but sunny and great views. Met a gamekeeper (seems a common occurrence on these moors) who was interested in how we had managed to get on to the access land, but was friendly and agreed it was a grand day to head up Mark Hill. Carried on to Meugher (a 2.5hr slog due to snow, with sogginess hidden beneath, and peat hags). Saw a female hen-harrier hunting on the moors. Back to the car down the track from Meugher, crossing the beck at the water-supply dam near where the track leaves access land, then back on to the High Blayshaw footpath. A 19.5km round and knackered.

Parked in the car park at Colt House Bridge and followed the track which begins in the corner of the car park and goes up the side of Colt House Gill all the way up to the intake. Then followed another track (initially well-surfaced) until it petered out at Bartle Well. From there hacked across the heather moor directly to the pillar, which retains its original cap. Then walked down to Raygill House Wig Stones and picked up the shooters' track until the wall was reached. From the wall an unmapped well-surfaced track leads all the way back to Colt House Gill Intake. After a quick look at the pretty waterfall it was a just simple stroll down the side of the Gill to return to the car park.

This has been the hardest trigging walk that me and Rocky have done to date ! so i score it a 10, this one i will remember a long time. We walked 11 miles 8 of them on the moors with no paths, a very hard walk, we set of from Grimwith Reservoir at 12:20 walking anticlockwise to the northern tip, then we turned right and followed Gate up Gill and up over Ashfold Gill Head, from there we walked across Raygill House Moor and arrived at Mark Hill Trig at 15:15. We walked back from the trig in as straight a line as we could manage walking across Gouthwaite Moor and Burn Gill Head Moss then we continued over Wig Stones Allotment following Trunla Gill back to Grimwith Reservoir arriving back at the car at 17:00.

Grimwith Reservoir We set of from here at 12:20
Rocky We walk to the Northern tip of the reservoir then turn right over the stile just after this bridge to follow Gate Up Gill.
Gate Up Gill We now follow this to Ashfold Gill Head.
Old Building We found this at SE 05616 67080 next to Gate Up Gill.
Gate Up Gill waterfall Gate Up Gill waterfall with Ashfold Gill Head in the background.
I can see the trig From the top of Ashfold Gill Head you can just see the trig 1.3 miles away.
At last we get to Mark Hill Arrived here at 15:15 after a hard walk, all we have to do now is walk back !!!!!!!!

HISTORY: Pillar completed 18th April 1955 costing £34.14s.4d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station SE38/T57 during 1955. Levelled for height also in 1955. Last maintained by the OS in May 1975. SITE VISIT: Up from east. Good parking in the well maintained Colthouse Car Park, off west side of public road at SE124698. Secure honesty box inside entrance. I was pleased to oblige with the voluntary payment request as most other visitors apparently do too. Initial climb up footpath on RHS of glen to SE119697 then long trudge through deep heather. Trig not at summit so advisable to keep compass and GPS handy. Pillar in good condition. Spider retains original OS centre cap with raised large narrow letters. Flush bracket faces ESE, ~121°, FB numerical neighbours are around Dingwall. Vented through southwest sight hole. Full 360° open outlook, ground continues to rise to the west. For return route, keep position on the skyline to avoid drifting off direction.

Tramping laboriously over burnt, boggy, tussocky, overgrown, burnt, knotty, boggy, burnt, scratchy, did i say boggy? makes you lose track of distance= speed x time... the trackless moor goes on and on -did i say boggy? the trig being not on a true high point i was wondering if i would even see it skylined at any point, i might have even gone a quarter mile to the side of it and missed it... but no, don't despair, perserverence paid off as i headed towards a very minor seperate rise of higher ground. Lovely listening to sandpipers and curlews up here. btw, parked in freebie carpark on lakeside and went up track and through various fields to the open moor- no goml activity, but then none saw me. Oh yes did i say boggy?
