The Mighty Hebog is a slog whichever route you choose. The one straight up from Beddgelert is by far the best and raises the pulse. A celebration of a cup of tea and a biccy was shared at the pillar before going through "Middle Earth" to reach Moel y Ogof and Moel Lefn. Mighty Hebog is for Burt Bacharach who passed away today (another one bites the dust). Had a little weep to "Walk on By" when driving home...not The Stranglers version.

Started from the National Trust car park near Pont Aberglaslyn (SH597 462) and took the path beside the river towards Beddgelert. Aberglaslyn was in full flow and made a spectacular start to the day. Not far along this path is the entrance to what appears to be a disused (iron ore?) mine. After about 45 minutes we approached Beddgelert, with a short detour to visit Gelert's grave. We began our ascent to Moel Hebog from the car park (£6) near The Goat Hotel, taking the path by the railway before turning left at the post marking the way. Most of the route is straightforward, but then becomes quite a scramble, with no obvious path, and is challenging (bear in mind, I am nearly 60) and I began to have thoughts about risk assessments. Just before the final ascent, we met a delightful couple Tom and Max, with their dog Indie on a circular walk, that included an easier descent via Beddgelert Forest. After one more scramble, the route becomes easier. At the top, the spectacular panorama soon made us realise that the effort is well worth making. As mentioned earlier, we returned via the forest to Beddgelert and then back along the river. According to the 'phone app, we covered about 18km from start to finish. I did think about awarding 10, but I'm saving that for St. Kilda. (If the NT shop had some cherry curd in stock, I might have given a 10.)
