Parked South of the trig at Grid SH898712, where the foot path comes out and the pylons take a turn. There is a turn off for the fields with area to park a car next to the salt bin. Go over the rusty gate opposite and head North 300m. When you get to the top by the trig to the left is a bit of fence with no barbed wire. Lovely clear day but windy. The Trig has been painted black...Needs a nice coat of white :-)

Being unable to find a path on my map I decided to chance the shortest route to the summit, it was quiet and there were just sheep watching. It was still a long walk though and quite strenuous in the afternoon sun but once at the top the views made it all worthwhile. Another fantastic location with 360º vistas.

After driving round for a while we decided the best approach was the shortest. Parked in a cut-in about 430 yards from our target, then set off up the hill. It was fairly easy going but with the sun beating down on us, it was rather hot. We also had an encounter with a sheep that thought it was a bull! Once at the summit we discovered there was an obstacle, so, by means best not documented, we overcame this obstacle and gained access to the pillar. As expected, the views were simply breathtaking.

There’s room to park a car at the start of the RoW west, south west of the pillar without blocking it… if you park carefully. Go north on the RoW until you reach the small gate into the field at 53° 13.853’N, 003° 39.951’W. Today was very misty with visibility down to just a few feet at times so it really was just a case of “following the arrow”. When you reach the junction of the field boundaries, follow the fence east but keep it on your right or you’ll have to climb over it further up the hill. The pillar is in good condition with all its metalwork in place. As I could only see a hundred yards or so at the summit, I missed out on all the views which was a bit of a bummer! A very nice, if very wet, walk across the pastures. A real test of the ‘waterproofness’ of my Lowa boots… but they kept my feet perfectly dry!

I have been aware of this fine hill tucked away behind my hometown for many, many years, but it wasn't until now that I finally got the chance to scale it. I'd walked up from Old Colwyn along lanes through Llysfaen and Dolwen. It was great to discover what I'd been missing out on for so long and it really was a perfect day to do so with blue skies and a warming breeze. After taking a late lunch beside the pillar I headed on to the next trig, Moelfre Isaf.

The pillar stands on top of a grassy mountain to the south west of Abergele. The pillar has a metal cap with raised, narrow lettering and FB S7336. I used the same approach as others. I parked at the junction of the minor roads and the byway to the south west. The byway was followed to its summit at the 298 spot height. Two gates and two large fields were crossed to reach the trig at the summit. Numerous sheep and new born lambs escorted me across the hill. The site has a huge view of the North Wales coast. The Clwydian Range can be seen to the east. There are broad moorland hills to the south with taller peaks in the distance. Snow could still be seen on parts of the more sheltered slopes of the mountains of Snowdonia to the west.
