Parked on Maes Mawr Road, Crynant and took the circuitous forestry tracks route through Crynant Forest to reach Mynydd Marchywel. From here the tracks took a more direct route northward to Varteg Hill – fantastic views from here. Walked back down to Crynant and up the other side of the valley following St Illtyds Way through more forest to reach the pillar at Penybegwyn, and back to Crynant. Out for seven hours, just over six hours of walking. An easy walking day albeit a bit tiring. Parts of the forest monotonous.

Parked at the Rheola Forest car park and hiked up to Sarn Helen. Did both trigs (this being the second). Set on high ground back off Sarn Helen, just past the point it’s crossed by St Illytyd’s Way. In a clearing overgrown by heather, but accessible by several paths through. Lovely forest setting, but the trees obscure any views. FB intact.

Lots of other interesting features found along the way to this one. Sarn Helen Markers and a Stone Roman Head Statue. Simple walk up along forestry road from Cefn coed Forest Car Park. Then right up St Iltyds path, steep and rocky for about 200 m to roman road trig is 100m on the right hidden in trees but easily found look for nearest track on right!

Up from Resolven on the St Illtyd's Way. A harder walk than we imagined it was going to be but smashing nevertheless on a marvellous day. Dry enough to sit down on the moss surrounding the pillar at present - bet that doesn't happen all that often.

Approached from The Crynant Forest road and after stopping to see the Stargazing Hare, continued up St Illtyd’s walk until reaching the crossroads with Sarn Helen Roman Rd. The pillar is quite near the crossroads and is in a very lonely location bit is not too difficult to get to, no views from trig as the area is surrounded by trees and bushes, there is also a healthy covering of moss on the pillar

Walked up from the Neath Canal car park near Resolven, along St Illtyd's Way. Very hot day, and the forestry was very wet, giving the most humid conditions I've ever experienced in the UK - I was soaked through with sweat after the steep climb. TP is surrounded by sparse forestry, restricting the view. Headed NE along Sarn Helen to TP3951 (Hirfynydd) before dropping through miles of forestry to start point. (Much of Sarn Helen was inundated by flying ants - there must have been billions of them. In places the ground appeared shimmering with millions of silvery wings, all moving.)
