Parked on the road to the east of the pillar. A straightforward walk up the public right of way (PRoW) from the B5062 to the south of the pillar. But...... there are electric fences on the boundary of the fields, and no stiles - so walk to the right to jump the gate up to the pillar. Some very lively stores in an adjacent field. Worth the 10 minutes walk to the top and see the views.

Parked on the road to the east of the pillar. This should have been a very straightforward walk up the public right of way (PRoW) from the B5062 to the south of the pillar. However, that route is littered with electric fences, including one which encircles the stile into the field!. However, that was not the main problem. In the trig field, were a lot of aggressive cows. As soon as I started walking up to the field, they began to mass and walk towards the open gate with the clear intent of charging. To have such cows like that along a PRoW is extremely irresponsible on the part of the landowner! Not to be put off however, I noticed that the cows were separated from the section of the field the pillar was in by an electric fence. Accordingly, I simply walked through several fields around to the back, which enabled me to enter the field from the other side. This involved climbing over a stile, walking through woodland, and climbing over two gates. When the cows saw me again, they started massing by the electric fence, but they were never going to get through that and I just ignored them. For anybody who comes across these cows in future, I would recommend parking on the road to the west of the pillar, climbing the gate at SJ 65440 19276. Then climb over a second gate at SJ 65798 19652, and then climb a third gate at SJ 65806 19646. That takes you into the trig field. That is the route I took on the way back, as the route through the wood is absolutely treacherous. The area around the pillar has become a dumping ground for tyres and broken chairs. This pillar was almost certainly built by the Royal Engineers in the mid 1940's. They would place their regimental crest on to the pillar. However, whilst the pillar has a recess to hold a crest, the crest either was not installed or has been lost. Wynnstay Hall near Ruabon, Wrexham, was used as a training establishment for the Royal Engineers Survey Cadre, and as part of their training during the 1943-47 period, the trainees were tasked with building some of the secondary and third order pillars. 8 pillars have the crest. 6 pillars are listed as having the recess, but no crest, but this is not amongst them. However, there are known to be others, of which this is almost certainly one.

Walked along line of public footpath, which the farmer had ploughed over. Some odd pipe ends sticking up around Pillar. Lovely day, good views, nb to the Wrekin, and a cereal crop growing around it. Pillar has attractive lichen growing on two faces and one countersunk face. All but one view holes open. Original cap. Retraced steps south to stile and road.
