Low speed ride along dusty, stony, occasionally uneven byway from Triple Plantation. Headed towards Sidbury Hill. Pillar is about two hundred metres north west of the ramparts up onto the hill fort. Has a checkpoint tag attached to the top. Seems unusual that the TP should be some way below the highest point in the area. Saved a scramble up the hill though. Would have been an interesting place to explore. Good views towards south and west.

Parked where the tank road meets the A338 to the ENE of the trig, then walked along the tank road to the trig. Trig in the middle of the grassy field, why isn't it at the highest point (Sidbury Hill)?? Trig in good condition, centrecap missing, front and left sightholes closed, right and rear sighthole open. I left a 2p coin in the rear sighthole for the next visitor to find. Lots of dirt bikes and quad bikes around today. Walked back via Sidbury Hill, but the top of the hill was all fenced off.

Chose to approach from A338 on typical army gravel road. Warning of army land and of unexploded ordnance but no red flag. Part way on a lady was loading her dogs into a car and she assured me the area was well used by locals. Where the ROW joins there's a signpost stating it is a permissive by-way. Left by taking "Old Marlborough Road" North to Everleigh. Easy cycling surface. Having yesterday visited FB 1909, the year of my father's birth, this FB 1924 is that of my mother's birth, and they appear to be in sight of each other!

Much evidence of military activity here but no danger zone marked on the OS maps, much helo activity also. Pillar is in reasonable condition, some slight chipping to one of the top edges; centre cap is missing; 2 sight holes sealed, 2 open. Pillar has been painted in the past, most of the paint now gone, but FB remains white. Good views particularly north across Vale of Pewsey.

Approached by a mile of bridleways and chalk tracks from the army cemetery on the main road, the pillar is situated on the lower grassy slopes of Sidbury Hill. The site is within the area of the unimproved chalk downland of the Salisbury Plain SSSI. It has FB S1924 but no plug. There is a rolling plain to the north and wide downland views to the west and south crisscrossed by modern military tacks and ancient earthworks; to the east rises the wooded ramparts of the Iron Age fort of Sidbury Hill. A low flying helicopter was in action to the north and from the woods in the northwest there was a rising plume of bright orange smoke and the sound of automatic gunfire.
